UNION — Union lineman and senior Elijah Gliddon will await a phone call from representatives of the Oregon East-West Shrine All-Star Football Game informing him to pack his bags and travel to Baker in July.
Gliddon was announced on Friday, April 5 as an alternate for the annual game pitting seniors representing the east side of the state versus senior from the west portion of the state in Baker City. This year’s game is scheduled for Saturday, July 27.
As a named alternate, Gliddon will step up if an offensive lineman named to the east squad is unable to attend. Alternates are frequently called upon to be in Baker City as those named to the roster have religious, college or family obligations making playing impossible.
The game features senior football players from the 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A levels. Proceeds from the game go to the Portland Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland, an institution providing care to children regardless of the families’ ability to pay.
Thirty players were originally named to the east roster with Gliddon joining 30 alternates on the recently released list. The game, first played in 1952, has raised over $5 million in support of the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Portland.
