High school softball: Tigers remain undefeated after sweep of Ontario

La Grande junior Carlee Strand threw 75 percent strikes and struck out 13 on April 13, 2024, as La Grande remained perfect on the season with two wins in Ontario.

ONTARIO — A trip to Ontario ended with the La Grande softball team maintaining a perfect 4-0 Greater Oregon League record and increased the overall record for the Tigers to 11-0 on the season.

The two games scheduled in Ontario were moved up on Friday, April 12, to earlier in the day due to concerns regarding a storm. The storm did arrive but in the form of La Grande bats as the visiting Tigers downed the hometown Tigers 8-2 to start the two-game day.

Offensively, La Grande put up nine hits in the game, highlighted by a home run off the bat of Mari Anderson.

Junior Carlee Strand was in the circle for the entire game, striking out 13 Ontario batters, while throwing an even 100 pitches, 75 of those strikes. Strand allowed only three Ontario hits in the game.

The big hitting for La Grande continued in the second game with Maddie Seavert and Joselyn Dodds both sending balls over the fence for home runs as La Grande claimed the team’s second win of the day with a 7-0 shutout.

Junior right hander Austyn Meuser went the full seven innings for La Grande, allowing three hits, while striking out five.

La Grande’s home game versus Burns/Crane scheduled for April 16 has been cancelled with a makeup date yet to be announced.

La Grande (11-0 overall, 4-0 4A Greater Oregon League) is home on April 19 in a bid to remain perfect both overall and in league play with two games against Pendleton (14-1 overall, 4-0 4A Greater Oregon League). In addition to a showdown of perfect league teams, the two games will also highlight two top-10 ranked state teams. Pendleton is currently seventh in the rankings while La Grande is ninth. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
