LA GRANDE — The method the La Grande girls used to dominate a home meet on Saturday, April 13, was very simple. In numerous events, the Tigers grabbed three or more of the top six finishes, compiling 192 points to overrun the rest of the field for the team title as the La Grande Invitational came to a conclusion.

As expected, the distance events belonged to the Tigers. Junior Cecilia Villagomez Edvalson and sophomore Brooke Perry ran first and second in the 800, finishing less than three seconds apart. The two reversed finishes in the 1,500 with Perry, Villagomez Edvalson and senior Emily Tubbs running in third place all setting new season best marks. In fifth, senior Kiah Carlson posted a personal best time of 5 minutes, 18.94 seconds.

Tubbs then won the 3,000, followed by Carlson in second to add even more points to the La Grande total team points.

The field events were not devoid of points for the Tigers. Junior Aubrey Bisenius also used the day to find a personal best throw of 101 feet, 9 inches in the javelin, second best for the day. Also finding the day to be a personal best was top finisher Taryn Mcllmoil and her 5 feet high jump with teammate Renee Hutchison picking up second in the event.

Competing in the ambulatory competition, sophomore Emilee Huntsman took first place in both the 400 meters and shot put events.

Imbler showed a powerful third-place showing in the team scores with 61 points.

The field in the 400 saw Imbler’s Paiten Braseth take the top time of the day with a time of 1 minute, 1.45 seconds. She then joined Paige Braseth, Jo Bingaman and freshman Isla Howard to win the 4-by-400 relay.

With 26 points on the day, Union snuck in a top-10 team finish, placing ninth. The Bobcats were led by a fourth-place showing in the 800 by junior Josie Patton, fourth place in the 300 hurdles by freshman Sawyer Shoemaker and an additional fourth-place showing by junior Kaelyn Shoemaker in the discus.

Powder Valley placed 12th, tied with Idaho’s Tri-Valley, both with 18 points. Senior Ayla Bingham led Powder Valley, placing second in the long jump and third in the 200 meters.

Elgin, with 17 points, finished the day 14th in the team scores and Cove’s seven points placed the girls’ team in 16th. Elgin saw an individual champion as sophomore Sierra Sauers won the discus with a career best mark of 102 feet, 8 inches. Cove’s distance specialist, sophomore Taylor Weishaar, finished third in the 3,000.
