College baseball: EOU finishes season with 16 wins

LA GRANDE — The La Grande baseball team closed out its 2024 season dropping three of four games to the College of Idaho. Despite the finish, EOU set a record with 16 wins, the most since the program was reinstated in 2021.

The Mountaineers dropped the first game on on Saturday 4-2 as the Yotes broke a 2-2 tie with single runs in the sixth and eighth innings.

Tommy Whiles hit a solo home run for EOU while pitcher Brock Cortes had nine strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.

The Mountaineers rebounded in the second game to get the 7-4 victory. EOU struck in the first inning as Mario Landeros reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Parker Cumberland to score. They extended their lead in the third inning with Landeros delivering an RBI single, bringing in Joey Freitas. Freitas added a two-run home run.

Eastern Oregon lost both Sunday games, 4-3 and 9-7.

EOU scored three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at 3-all in the first game. However, the Yotes got a run in the bottom of the eighth to win.

Landeros two-run homer started the scoring in the seventh, driving in Tommy Whiles. They then tied the game after Tyler Balkenbush doubled to right field, scoring Carson Gerding.

The College of Idaho scored seven run in the sixth inning to win the second game. Whiles and Landeros each had three hits and combined to drive five runs.
