High school girls track and field: Cove boys grab third at Ontario meet

- A blistering first lap allowed Cove senior Eli Williams to cruise to a victory in the 800 on April 26, 2024, at the Valley Family Health Care Invitational in Ontario.
ONTARIO — Led by first-place individual showings by junior Nathanael O’Reilly and senior Eli Williams, the Cove boys track and field team boarded the bus home after a day in Ontario competing in the Valley Family Health Care Invitational on Saturday, April 27, with a third-place finish.
The Leopards finished the day with 75 points, just three points shy of second place Tri-Valley, Idaho. Nyssa ran away with the team title with 162 points.
The Cove girls, with 19 points, finished 10th in the team scores. Like the boys, 3A Nyssa also grabbed the team trophy for the girls.
Williams used the Ontario meet to run his best time of the season, cruising over the finish line in first place with a time of 1 minute, 59.99 seconds in the 800. The race was all Williams as he outran the competition in the first lap and cruised in the second and final lap for the win.
O’Reilly cleared 11 feet in his pole vault win, tying his personal best for his career.
The duo picked up team assistance from sophomore William Williams’ second-place finish in the javelin and senior Rowan Hassinger’s second place in the high jump.
The Cove boys also joined for second place in the 4-by-400 relay with a team comprised of Eli Williams, O’Reilly, David McDonald and Rowan Hassinger.
The top finish for the Leopard girls came in the 1500 meters as sophomore Taylor Weishaar ran a person best time of 5 minutes, 24.83 seconds in the 1,500, a second-place showing.
The girls also saw a third-place finish in the 4-by-400 relay with a young team of freshmen Sabrina Marler, CJ Delaney and Chloe Hatch and sophomore Paige Marler.
The Cove team travels to Baker on May 3 to compete in the Ray Uriarte Invite.
