High school baseball: Union/Cove opens playoffs at home

UNION — Despite falling in the final three games of the regular season to Grant Union/Prairie City/Monument, Union/Cove will begin postseason play after finishing fourth in the 2A/1A Special District 7.

The Bobcats closed out the district season with two home losses as the district leading Prospectors were in town on Friday, May 3. The Prospectors won game one 6-3 and cruised in game two to a 16-1 victory.

Union/Cove closes out the regular season with a 10-10 overall record, including a 9-3 2A/1A Special District 7 finish.

District playoff action begins May 7 in Union with Sherman/Condon/Arlington/Wheeler (6-6 overall, 9-11 2A/1A Special District 7) coming to town for a 4 p.m. game.

These two teams met once early in the season on March 27 with the Huskies sliding by the Bobcats in a 7-6 game.

The state rankings show Union/Cove at No. 31, while Sherman/Condon/Arlington/Wheeler is ranked 31st. Offensively, the Bobcats hold the advantage with the bats driving in 185 runs this season compared to 124 runs for the Huskies. Defensively, this game is almost a dead heat with Union/Cove allowing 153 runs, while Sherman/Condon/Arlington/Wheeler has allowed 152 runs.
