PENDLETON — An inch or two in a field event. An Ontario or Baker athlete placing one spot higher or lower in an event. A handoff resulting in a disqualification in the 4-by-100 relay. Any small item could have changed the scores but in the end, both the La Grande and Pendleton girls ended the day with identical 93 points as the 4A Greater Oregon League track and field championship came to an end on Saturday, May 11, in Pendleton.

The Tigers and Bucs can now both claim the district team title.

It was not that way on the boys side as Pendleton ran away with the team title after putting up 113 points. La Grande was a far second after a 77-point day and Baker rounded out the top three with 50 points.

To the surprise of none, the strength of the La Grande girls came in the distance events.

Starting with sophomore Mattie Wolcott’s win in the 400, the Tigers took victories in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000 contests. Junior Cecilia Villagomez Edvalson was first to the tape in the 800, while sophomore Brooke Perry won both the 1,500 and 3,000 races. In the 1,500, Perry was followed by teammates senior Emily Tubbs and Villagomez Edvalson. The 3,000 saw Tubbs follow Perry and senior Kiah Carlson place third.

Sophomore Taryn Mcllmoil also grabbed a district title with her leap of 4 feet, 10.5 inches in the high jump.

For the La Grande boys, Korey Newman closed out his senior career with a district title in the 200, crossing the line in 22.98 seconds, a new personal record. Fellow senior Austin Uhl grabbed two first-place medals for the day, winning both the 800 followed up by a win in the 1,500.

Freshman Brogan Hedgepeth placed second in the discus event, reaching a personal record distance of 145 feet, 4 inches.
