High school girls golf: Second-day struggles drop Tigers to seventh-place state finish

BLUE RIVER — Trailing by only five strokes after the first day of play at the OSAA Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state girls golf championship, the La Grande team appeared poised to make a run at a team state title.
A difficult round on day two, one that saw the Tigers increase the team stroke total by 22 from day one, dropped the team to seventh in the team rankings as the two-day championship came to an end on Tuesday, May 14, at the Tokatee Golf Club.
The first day team leader, North Bend, also dropped from the top spot to third, while Salem Academy took home the team state championship.
After firing a team total 388 on day one, the Tigers ended the tournament with a day two 410 to finish with a total 798.
Individually, the top La Grande finish went to senior Dylann Justice and her 17th-place showing. Justice carded a 90 the first day followed by a 96 to close out her tournament.
Junior Natasha Lane placed 23rd in the field after a first day 93 combined with a second day 103 resulted in a score of 196.
Senior Emma Bell followed a first day 97 with a second day 110 to tally a score of 207, 32nd in the individual standings.
Two spots behind, junior Makayla Hibbert finished 34th. Hibbert bucked the Tiger trend in shooting a better score on the second day. The Tiger started the tournament with a 108, shaving seven strokes off her score on day two for a 101 and a 209 total.
La Grande junior Olesya Forbes finished up in 54th for the tournament with a total 231.
Forbes fired a 112 the first day and followed it up with a 119 day two score.
