High school baseball: Bobcats wrap up regular season, prepare for state

UNION — The Union/Cove baseball team finished the regular season on a high note, taking a 7-5 victory over the La Grande junior varsity on Thursday, May 16.

The Bobcats then played a waiting game for the rankings to close to determine the team’s next game in the state playoffs. After playing to a 12-11 overall record, including a 9-3 finish in 2A/1A Special District 7, the Bobcats tied for fourth in the district standings with Irrigon, also wrapping up the year with a 9-3 record.

Waking up May 17, the Bobcats discovered a trip to Lost River on May 20 is on the calendar.

Union/Cove opens state playoff action versus the Pirates with a 3 p.m. start time in Lost River. The Pirates host the Bobcats after winning 2A/1A Special District 6, closing out the year with a 16-4 overall record, including an 11-1 district performance. Lost River is currently 11th in the state rankings.

The winner will advance to round two to take on No. 6 St. Paul.
