High school track and field: Uhl, Perry lead Tigers to top 5 state finishes

- La Grande's Korey Newman crosses the finish line in the 200 on May 18, 2024, at the OSAA Class 4A state track and field championship at the University of Oregon. Newman finished seventh in the event, turning in a time of 22.75 seconds.
EUGENE — La Grande’s boys and girls track teams returned from the OSAA Class 4A state track and field championship with top-five team finishes as competition ended Saturday, May 18, at Hayward Field in Eugene.
The La Grande boys, led by senior Austin Uhl, finished the meet with a total of 42 points, fourth in the team standings.
The girls, led by sophomore Brooke Perry, tied for fifth in the team totals as La Grande, Molalla and Mazama each compiled 41 points.
Running in his final high school meet, Uhl finished first in two races to round out his career. In the 800, the senior crossed the finish in 1 minute, 53.64 seconds, a personal best and a new state meet record. Uhl finished his day with a win in the 1,500, again posting a personal best time of 4 minutes, 1.20 seconds. In both races, Uhl started the race quickly, leading early and didn’t allow the competition to stay in the race at the end.
Uhl was not the only one to add to the La Grande point total. Sophomore Bekham Hibbert placed second in the shot put with a distance of 51 feet, 1.5 inches.
Freshman Brogan Hedgepeth, taking part in his first state meet, placed third in the discus event with a personal best throw of 151 feet, 9 inches.
Senior Korey Newman ended his senior year with a time of 11.35 seconds in the 100, earning seventh in the race. Newman replicated seventh in the 200 with a personal best time of 22.75 seconds.
Newman joined with Hibbert and seniors Mason Wolcott and David Sain for a fourth-place showing in the 4-by-100 relay with a time of 44.74 seconds.
For the girls, sophomore Perry repeated her championship from last year in the 3,000, taking the win in 10 minutes, 30.87 seconds. Her attempt to repeat in the 1,500 came up just short as she placed third with a time of 4 minutes, 50.66 seconds. In the 1,500 meters, Perry was followed by senior Emily Tubbs in fourth and Cecilia Villagomez Edvalson in fifth.
Tubbs also ended her high school career with a fifth-place finish in the 3,000.
Junior Kayle Collman grabbed sixth place in the 100 after crossing the line at 12.95 seconds. Sixth was also the placement for junior Kylie Brown in the 200 with a time of 26.25 seconds. Sixth place continued in the 400 with sophomore Mattie Wolcott’s time of 1 minute, 1.44 seconds.
The lone top-10 finish in the field events for La Grande went to sophomore Taryn Mcllmoil as she cleared 4 feet, 11 inches in the high jump, seventh in the standings.
Crook County dominated the boys standings with 96 points. Marshfield, with 46 points, grabbed second with Pendleton a single point back at 45 points.
Philomath took the team title for the girls after putting up 74 points. Cascade and North Bend tied for second with both teams ending with 51 points, while Scappoose’s 43 points was fourth.
