College track & field: TJ Davis named decathlon champion, Eastern Oregon competes at NAIA Outdoor Championships

MARION, Ind. — TJ Davis highlighted Eastern Oregon University’s trip to Marion, Indiana for the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, as the graduate student came away victorious in the men’s decathlon.
The Mountaineers men’s team finished 15th overall with 18 points, while the women’s team earned one point.
Davis scored 7,231 points in the decathlon, narrowly defeating Dakota State’s Treshawn Roberts who finished with 7,172 points. Davis placed second in six out of the 10 events: 1,500 meters, javelin, discus, 110-meter hurdles, 400 meters, and shot put. His outdoor national championships adds to his 2022 indoor heptathlon national title. The title came down to the 1,500 meters, where Davis set a new personal record and defeated Roberts to earn the national championships crown.
In the women’s heptathlon, Lizzy Grandle earned one point with an eighth-place finish. Adrienne Washington placed ninth. Grandle placed third in both the high jump and javelin, while Washington placed second in the javelin.
Israel Miles earned All-American status in the decathlon, placing sixth with 6,365 points. His top finish came in the pole vault, where he placed third.
In the men’s steeplechase, Hunter Nichols placed fourth overall with a time of 9:07.08. North Powder native Justin Ash placed 11th at 9:22.33.
In the throws, Tanner Nett placed 18th in the shot put with a distance of 16.04 meters.
Women’s high jump saw two admirable performances from the Mountaineers, as Washington placed 14th at 1.68 meters and Grandle came in 16th with a jump of 1.65 meters.
Osman Osman placed 21st in the 400 meters, finishing with a program-record time of 47.90.
Eastern Oregon women’s 4×400 relay team placed 14th overall with a time of 3:53.07. The team consisted of Kadence Black, Taylor Joyce, Lauryn Mitchell, and Sydney Peck.
The NAIA Outdoor Championships conclude the 2024 track season and mark the final Eastern Oregon sporting event of the 2023-24 academic year.
