LA GRANDE — The La Grande Police Department cited two teenagers for criminal mischief on suspension they damaged 15 windows at Willow School in La Grande during the Fourth of July weekend.

The males are 13 and 14, according to police, and the vandalism occurred at about 8 p.m. Friday, July 5, at the school at 1305 N. Willow St., which houses the La Grande School District’s administrative offices.

La Grande Police Lt. Jason Hays said the juveniles threw rocks at the windows.

Police citations for the teenagers have not yet been delivered, Hays said, because the juveniles live out of state, making them more difficult to reach. The police department did not disclose the names of the juveniles.

Eight storm windows and seven glass windows behind the storm windows were broken. Eleven of the windows were on the back side of Willow, which faces east and is next to a playground. The other four windows were on the north side of Willow.

La Grande School District teachers Parker McKinley and Dalton Sheets installed boards in the spaces of the broken Willow windows on July 6. McKinley is the teacher for the La Grande High School Tiger House construction program, and Sheets is a woodworking teacher at La Grande Middle School.

“There was a lot of damage,’’ said McKinley, who noted there was a significant amount of broken glass outside and inside Willow.

McKinley and Sheets placed custom-cut boards in each of the window frames that had a broken glass window, making them inaccessible. Later all of the broken glass was removed.

The glass and storm windows will be replaced over the next two weeks, said La Grande School District Superintendent George Mendoza. Insurance will cover the cost.

Mendoza added surveillance video of the incident helped police identify the vandals.
