LA GRANDE — La Grande is now the latest stop on the Oregon Film Trail, thanks to the independent drama “Breakup Season,” which was filmed in the city in 2023.
The Oregon Film Trail is a collection of signs around the state commemorating the locations where memorable films and television shows were filmed. The trail includes signs marking films like “The Goonies” (filmed in Astoria), “Twilight” (filmed partially in Cottage Grove) and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (filmed in Salem and Depoe Bay).
The 43rd sign in the statewide series commemorates “Breakup Season,” and was dedicated Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1315 Adams Ave. in downtown La Grande.
The sign joins the Eastern Loop of the Film Trail, which highlights the filmmaking history of Eastern Oregon and its impact on local tourism and economic development. Before “Breakup Season,” the most recent addition to the Eastern Loop came in May, when a sign marking the production of 1969’s “Paint Your Wagon” was dedicated in Baker City.
“Breakup Season” has other connections to La Grande: The writer and director of the movie, H. Nelson Tracey, showed a documentary at the Eastern Oregon Film Festival in 2019 and later was a participant in the festival’s filmmaker residency program, where he worked on the script for the movie. And the 2022 edition of the festival featured a staged reading of the script with local actors.
