From the editor’s desk: New stories from our new location

Published 8:00 am Saturday, November 16, 2024

As word spread about the vandalism to the StoryWalk at La Grande's Riverside Park, community members reached out to offer assistance of all sorts to the Cook Memorial Library. The damaged panels, one of which is shown in this photograph taken Nov. 15, 2024, were all replaced on Jan. 30, 2025.

Thanks to everyone who joined us Tuesday afternoon at the new Observer offices on Adams Avenue for our ribbon-cutting ceremony — and thanks to the Union County Chamber of Commerce for joining in the celebration.

We’re thrilled with our new location — and it’s great to have a place right in the heart of La Grande’s downtown. If you couldn’t make Tuesday’s event, feel free to stop by and say hello the next time you walk by our new space at 1112 Adams.

And now, at the risk of being repetitive, here’s something I’m going to keep reminding you about: Even though the printed edition of the East Oregonian that you receive each week includes the best stories from the Observer, it doesn’t have nearly enough room in its pages for all of them. And our stories regularly appear on our website well before they’re printed in the East Oregonian.

Here’s what that means to you: To get our full news report, you need to keep an eye on our website, lagrandeobserver.com. I try to post fresh content on the website every day, although I do get to take a day off from time to time.

So, right now, you can find a big batch of news on the website that hasn’t yet been printed in the East Oregonian:

Most Popular

• News that the Cook Memorial Library’s StoryWalk at Riverside Park had been vandalized demoralized library staff members. But as word got out about the damage, it triggered a gratifying outpouring of support for the library.

• Stacy Follett, the former employee of BillyBob’s Butcher Shop and Strafford’s Custom Meats who stole more than $35,000 from the business, pleaded guilty to seven felony county and was sentenced to more than seven years in prison. The sentencing hearing laid bare the devastating impacts of the crime: Not only did it bring the business to the brink of bankruptcy, it shattered friendships.

• The Ad Dad, the fast-growing video and audio production company in La Grande, has a new home: It’s moved into the Observer’s old offices at 911 Jefferson Ave. and has big plans for the space.

Those local stories are posted right now on our website, lagrandeobserver.com.

If your news interests extend to Eastern Oregon, here’s another reminder: As a subscriber to the Observer, you have free access to five other websites that cover the region: the Wallowa County Chieftain, the East Oregonian, the Hermiston Herald, the Baker City Herald and the Blue Mountain Eagle in John Day.
