LA GRANDE — If you’re shopping at Walmart in Island City on Dec. 17 and see a horde of law enforcement, there is no need to worry.
La Grande Police Department is hosting the 16th annual Shop with a Cop starting at 11 a.m., according to a press release from police Lt. Jason Hays. The event gives 15 local children the opportunity to buy Christmas gifts for their families with the help of law enforcement officers from La Grande Police Department, Union County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon State Police.
“Over 35 volunteers help make this event a success each year, and the LGPD is grateful for the continued support of Walmart,” according to Hays.
Children are selected for Shop with a Cop on the recommendations of school counselors. The children chosen are those with financial need who counselors believe would benefit from one-on-one time with a law enforcement officer.
Each child receives $150 to purchase gifts during their shopping spree. They also get to pick something special for themselves. The gifts are then wrapped by volunteers while the kids enjoy lunch provided by Dominos Pizza and Coca-Cola.
Walmart plays a crucial role in Shop with a Cop, Hays said. The company helps make the event memorable through its grant donations, clothing, gift donations and volunteer assistance.
Shop with a Cop also is made possible through the help of Loveland’s Funeral Chapel, Sunrise Rotary and other local businesses and community members who donate to the program, according to the press release.
Anyone interested in donating can contact Hays or Erin Dickhausen with the La Grande Police Department at 541-963-1017.
“The La Grande Police Department looks forward to another successful and heartwarming event that continues to foster positive relationships between law enforcement and the community,” Hays said in the release.
