UNION COUNTY — Oregon State Police on Jan. 1 arrested a Pendleton man who fled from law enforcement following an attempted traffic stop for speeding on Interstate 84.
OSP arrested Kenneth Doughty, 37, for felony fleeing, reckless driving and misdemeanor driving while suspended. State police also took him into custody for three warrants out of Umatilla County.
Shortly after 10:30 a.m. trooper Jonathan Boggs noticed the driver — who OSP later identified as Kenneth Doughty — of a white pickup was following too closely behind another car while traveling east on I-84, according to a probable cause declaration. While attempting to catch up to stop the pickup, Boggs reported the driver passed another car using the right lane and was traveling at approximately 105 mph.
Doughty took Exit 261 into La Grande, according to police reports. Boggs wrote that Doughty passed another car that was stopped at the bottom of the off-ramp before turning right onto Island Avenue. Boggs turned on his emergency lights and sirens. Doughty then reportedly turned onto the westbound I-84 on-ramp and continued onto the interstate.
Boggs followed and pulled up next to the pickup near milepost 259, according to the probable cause declaration. He reported Doughty appeared to be trying to hide his face.
Doughty took Exit 257 and continued heading west on Upper Perry Lane, according to law enforcement. The pursuit ended after the right rear tire of the pickup fell off near the Historic Bridge Overlook and the pickup came to a stop.
OSP arrested Doughty at the scene and lodged him in Union County Jail, according to the probable cause declaration. On the way to jail, Doughty reportedly told Boggs he had seen him and that he’d messed up.
Doughty is due in court on Jan. 23 for a plea hearing, according to Oregon public records.
