Nightly headliners

Developing their friendship while playing in the Los Angeles music scene, Midland was officially formed in 2014 in Texas. According to their biography, the trio was launched after playing together during a wedding gathering in 2013 with an intent to “reintroduce the Western plains, Laurel Canyon-cum-Bakersfield and Lone Star juke joints to country music.” Taking their moniker from Dwight Yoakam’s song “Fair to Midland, the trio has grown from a honky tonk bar band to an in-demand headliner.

Born into a family of preachers, Paul Cauthen has been referred to as a neotraditional artist who blends funk with alternative country music. According to an October 2024 story in The Tennessean, the Texas troubadour is known as “Big Velvet” because of his smooth baritone voice. Also in a single on his “Room 41” album, the singer-songwriter describes self-destructive habits, redemption and embracing one’s true self.

“I’m a wild east Texas boy who doesn’t fake anything,” Cauthen said.

Hailing from a one-stoplight town in Virginia, 49 Winchester formed in 2013. Their unique brand of alt-country is heavy on the rock ‘n’ roll with a nod to their roots with Appalachian folk.

“We’re trending more towards being a rock band instead of a country band,” frontman Isaac Gibson said during a 2022 interview with the Grand Ole Opry. “But, at the same time, I don’t think anybody’s ever known quite what to call it.”

Pre-party/after-party events

Each day of the festival features free pre-party and after-party shows in downtown Pendleton at Great Pacific and on Main Street outside the Rainbow Cafe.

Pre-party musicians are Darby Sparkman on Thursday, Smith & Tegio on Friday and Willy Vlautin on Saturday.

After-party shows will be Jenny Don’t and the Spurs on Thursday, Darci Carlson on Friday and Neon Prairie Dogs on Saturday.
