From the editor’s desk: 2025 has started with news aplenty

Published 9:00 am Saturday, January 18, 2025

Dear readers,

The East Oregonian and our related newsrooms have been busy this new year covering significant events.

• Oregon firefighters have headed to Southern California to help combat the wildfires there, and that includes many from Eastern Oregon.

Jayson Jacoby at the Baker City Herald reported on the Baker School District being part of a data breach involving hundreds of schools across the U.S. Check that out

Bill Bradshaw with the Wallowa County Chieftain has a report on the forthcoming Eagle Cap Extreme Sled Dog Race.

La Grande’s iconic Hought’s 24 Flavors closed in September and is going up for sale in the spring.

EO reporter Berit Thorson covered the closing of the Eastern Oregon Cancer Center at Pendleton.

Berit and Isabella Crowley with The Observer in La Grande teamed up for a preview of the upcoming Point-In-Time count of people who are homeless. We’ll have that report online and in print next week.

We’ve also talked to Eastern Oregon lawmakers about the upcoming legislative session that starts Tuesday, Jan. 21. We’ll have that report available online early Monday.

As always, you can find more about community events and other news at each of our websites: East Oregonian, Baker City Herald, Blue Mountain Eagle, Hermiston Herald, The Observer and Wallowa County Chieftain.
