JOSEPH — Clayton Perry, of Power, Montana, took home the top prize Saturday, Jan. 25, as winner of the 200-mile stretch of the Eagle Class Extreme Sled Dog Race.
He finished the race in 32 hours and 53 minutes with a team of 12 dogs.
The win qualifies Perry to compete in the more grueling 1,000-mile Iditarod and Yukon Quest races, but he’s not taking those on.
“No, I don’t plan to,” he said, while autographing ECX souvenirs.
He does have hopes of going onto winning the Rocky Mountain Triple Crown in Colorado, also known as the Race to the Sky. He won that in 2020.
All the winners were appreciative of the Wallowa County community for its support in putting on the race.
“I just want to thank the community here,” said Nicole Lombardi, of Lincoln, Montana, came in first in the 100-mile leg of the ECX. “They did such a great job.”
Lombardi ran a team of eight dogs.
Wallowa County’s lone musher this year, Craig Anderson, of Enterprise, won the two-day 62-mile “short race.”
The race is run with a team of six dogs.
He said while the trails were on hard-packed snow, they were particularly well groomed and well marked.
“You can’t have a race without that,” he said. “You’ve got to know which way to go.”
It’s a race he’s competed in before, but this was his first win, Anderson said.
At least this year there was snow. The 2024 race was canceled for a lack of the white stuff.
The awards were presented Jan. 25 during a ceremony at the Joseph Community Events Center following a post-race dinner for the mushers.
