From the editor’s desk: Sometimes local and national news mesh

Published 9:00 am Saturday, February 1, 2025

Dear readers,

What happens at the White House often does not have an immediate effect at the local level. However, some of President Donald Trump’s executive orders certainly have, and our newsrooms reported on those effects in several articles:

Federal pause rescinded but uncertainty remains for Pendleton Urban Renewal project

Pendleton Children’s Center moves forward with building purchase after funding freeze scare

Trump funding freeze breeds uncertainty in Wallowa County

Trump to federal workers: Shape up or ship out

And in another Trump-related move, Jayson Jacoby at the Baker City Herald reported in-depth on Matthew Leland Klein, a Baler City man who was going to federal prison for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol until Trump pardoned all those who had been convicted.

But we also had plenty to cover not related to actions out of the White House, including “EOU to advance technology skills with workforce ready grants” and “School districts in Umatilla County hit in data breaches.” And a former Baker County couple is looking for a place to erect a cross remembering their 3-year-old son who died in an accident at their home in Wallowa County in early 2024.
