- Zachary Banks will direct the Grande Ronde Symphony's winter concert on March 12 at EOU's McKenzie Theater in La Grande.
LA GRANDE — The Grande Ronde Symphony will be presenting their winter concert, “Winterscapes,” under the baton of Zachary Banks on Wednesday, March 12, 7 p.m. at McKenzie Theater on the campus of Eastern Oregon University.
“We traditionally offer more classical musical genres for our winter concert and this program is a unique blending of works from composers from the 1840s to mid-1900s,” said Alice Trindle, Grande Ronde Symphony Association president. “The theme of ‘Winterscapes’ came to us from the variety of feelings, emotions and pictures these pieces evoke.”
In his program notes, Banks, music director for the symphony, draws out some of those descriptions to be heard. For example, in “Waltz” from Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky, the elegance and melancholy of the ballroom are captured. The mood changes with the performance of Faurés “Dolly Suite’”with its perfect example of this French composer’s harm and refinement.
After intermission comes the deep emotions of “Evening Prayer and Dream Pantomime” from Hänsel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck. The melody is simple yet profoundly moving, capturing both the children’s innocence and a sense of quiet reassurance.
The final piece of the concert is “Petite Suite de Concert, Op. 77” by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.
“The lighthearted, charming and effortless elegance of this English composer’s work will leave the audience ready to tackle, with great energy, whatever may be left of our winter months,” Banks writes in the program notes.
