ENTERPRISE — Elizabeth Kokesh, horsewoman and collector of all things vintage Western, came to Wallowa County four years ago from Sisters after catching the “horse bug.”

Magical timing seemed to follow her even on day one when she randomly met her partner, saw the house she now calls home and began successfully working with some of the county’s horse people.

She dreamed of owning a store, and was ready when the opportunity came to open Latigo Western Store in Enterprise.

The display of hats, boots, leather goods, art and antiques help to showcase the work and vintage Western wear carefully stocked throughout the store. Identifying the vintage Western wear trend seen on the streets of Portland and other big cities around the world, Kokesh said, “They (city people) want the natural fabrics and high-quality vintage Western wear that was made to last; that’s what I sell at Latigo.”

The store is for locals, too.

“These are everyday clothes for a lot of people here,” she said. “Ranchers, farmers and others value high quality pieces that help them get their work done. They just happen to be a fashion trend right now.”

Since opening last December, locals have been visiting the new store to find the collection she has “rescued” from throughout the Northwest and beyond. Easily connecting with those who enter her store, she said customers often linger to share stories that her curated collection inspires.

A new tack store will be added this summer with new and previously owned tack available for sale, and consignment services will be offered.

Latigo Western Store is at 107½ E. Main St., No 112 in downtown Enterprise. Store hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
