LA GRANDE — A Union County jury Monday, April 21, convicted a La Grande man of second-degree murder.
The jury found Mamas Genagritis, 56, was guilty of killing his girlfriend, Deanna Badgley, in May 2022 at the couple’s Robbs Hill Road home.
The jury returned its verdict after about 30 minutes of deliberation following closing arguments from the prosecution and defense. Jurors also determined Genagritis was not guilty except for insanity, an argument the defense raised during trial.
Union County District Attorney Kelsie McDaniel prosecuted the case for the state. Attorneys James Schaeffer and Jeffrey MacNeilly represented Genagritis.
Murder is a Measure 11 crime in Oregon, and a person convicted of the charge faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years in prison.
For now, Genagritis remains in the custody of the Union County Sheriff’s Office. He exercised his statutory right to have at least 48 hours between a jury returning a guilty verdict and judgement.
McDaniel also requested judgement be scheduled later as there are individuals who exercised their constitutionally mandated victims rights that would need to fly in from out of state to be present for the sentencing.
The court will set Genagritis’ sentencing for a later date.
