LA GRANDE — Law enforcement successfully recovered and destroyed a roadside bomb found near downtown La Grande on Wednesday, April 23, without any injuries.
An Oregon State Police bomb squad responded to La Grande after law enforcement received a report of a suspicious device near the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Greenwood Street, according to a press release from La Grande Police Department. LGPD Lt. Jason Hays said the device posed a threat to public safety.
“We are extremely grateful to the Oregon State Police Explosives Unit for their prompt and skilled response,” he said. “Their actions ensured the safety of our community.”
An employee of Goss Motors called police around 6:30 a.m. to report a “suspicious homemade device,” according to the press release. Officers responded to the scene immediately — closing Jefferson Avenue between Greenwood and Fir streets as a precautionary measure until a bomb squad could be called out.
The homemade explosive was constructed within a pressurized container wrapped in electricians tape, Hays said, measuring roughly 8 inches in length by 3 inches in diameter. It contained explosive material and BBs.
The explosives unit swiftly neutralized the IED without any incident, according to Hays. Law enforcement reopened Jefferson Avenue by 2:30 p.m.
“We would like to remind the public that if anyone encounters a suspicious object or device, do not touch or approach it,” Hays said. “Instead, contact law enforcement immediately by calling 911.”
The investigation remains ongoing, Hays said, and updates will be provided as they are available. Law enforcement is asking that anyone with information about the incident to contact the police department at 541-963-1017.
