High school boys wrestling: Elgin third, Imbler ninth at Heppner tournament

HEPPNER — Elgin again had a good showing, placing third in the team standings at the Bank of Eastern Oregon tournament in Heppner on Saturday, Jan. 27.

Imbler also managed a top-10 finish, placing ninth in the team scoring.

The Huskies finished the day on the mats with 170.5 points, a mere one-point shy of second place Irrigon’s 171.5. Hood River Valley was crowned champions after putting up 239 points. Imbler’s point total was 63.

For Elgin, three wrestlers were crowned individual champions. Landyn Fincher, wrestling at 106 pounds, finished the tournament a perfect 4-0 including a pin over Imbler’s Evan Burns in the championship match. At 157 pounds, Gen Wintersteen also wrestled to a 4-0 record, taking an 8-2 decision over Heppner’s Zachary Brown in the final match for the individual title.

Ty McLaughlin is now 25-4 for the year after a 4-0 tournament. McLaughlin battled to a 5-2 decision in the 175-pound class for first place in the tournament.

Elgin also picked up a second place showing from Brandon Medlock along with third place finishes by Kadin Allen and Dakota Hogan.

Imbler saw a second-place finish by Evan Burns at 106 pounds for the Panthers’ top finish. At 150 pounds, Anthony Pallis placed third and Isaih Trujillo also finished third at 165 for Imbler.
