College men’s wrestling: Mountaineers take wins over Vanguard and Arizona Christian

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Eastern Oregon University men’s wrestling program started off a busy weekend in Arizona with two convincing dual victories on Friday, January 5.
The Mountaineers defeated Vanguard 29-12, before beating Arizona Christian 32-10 later in the day. The victories improved the team’s record in duals to 7-2 this season.
Eastern Oregon 29, Vanguard 12
Starting off the match, Vanguard’s Dominic De’altonaga defeated Eastern Oregon’s Zach Mauras by a sudden victory at the 125-pound weight class.
Despite the Mountaineers gaining points at 133 due to forfeit, the Lions retook the lead with a decision victory at 141.
At 149 pounds, Eastern Oregon’s AJ Rockwell defeated Bryant Avila by fall in a time of 6:51. At 157, Vanguard’s Noah Elliot defeated Michael Fox by a 7-5 decision.
Parker Robinson earned a 3-0 decision victory for the Mountaineers at the 165-pound weight class. After the Lions earned a decision victory at 174, the Mountaineers were victorious in the final three matches of the dual.
At 184, Kyle Knudtson defeated Jacob Potts by fall. Jay Smith earned a tech fall at the 5:54 mark to take the victory at the 197-pound weight class. Darrian Hoobery closed out the dual for the Mountaineers at 285, walking away victorious by way of a 4-3 decision.
Eastern Oregon 32, Arizona Christian 10
The Mountaineers had a quick turnaround to their second dual of the day, facing off with Arizona Christian.
Eastern Oregon started off the dual with three straight victories, setting the tone early on. At 125, Zach Mauras defeated James Maheras by an 11-3 major decision. Braden Carson earned a 9-1 major decision victory at 133, followed by an 11-3 major decision for Cole Cross at the 141-pound level.
Arizona Christian took victories at 149 and 165, but a victory by fall at 157 for Cody Glenn helped keep Eastern Oregon out in front.
Wylee Lindeen (174) and Jay Smith (197) both took victories by major decision, while Kyle Knudtson was victorious at 184 by way of fall.
Arizona Christian won the final match of the dual, but Eastern Oregon held a large enough advantage to walk away victorious, 32-10.
Coming off the wins, Eastern Oregon will be back in action in Arizona on Jan. 6. The Mountaineers will face off with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona at 1 p.m. PT.
