High school wrestling roundup: Elgin top local team at JO-HI

JOSEPH – A sixth-place team showing by the Elgin boys’ wrestling team led local squads taking the mats at the annual JO-Hi (Cosgrove-Eschler) wrestling tournament on Saturday, Jan. 6.

The Huskies ended the two days with 104 points. An Idaho team, Clearwater Valley, took the team title back to Idaho after a point total of 194.5.

Union, with 28 points, placed 12th in the 16 teams while Imbler picked up 15th.

Two Elgin wrestlers stood at the top of the podium as individual champions. At 106 pounds, Landyn Fincher recorded a pin over Irrigon’s Jakson Coffman in the championship match for the win. Ty McLaughlin, competing in the 175-pound class, also pinned an Irrigon wrestler for the title. Now 16-2 for the year, McLaughlin pinned Xander Olman at the 2 minute, 56 second mark.

The Huskies also picked up a third at 132 pounds from Kadin Allen and Phoenix Schultze placing fourth at 113 pounds.

Union was led by Sam Platz and a second-place finish at 165 pounds with Platz falling the championship round to Santiam Christian’s Kamran Ness in a close 2-3 decision.

For Imbler, Anthony Pallis finished 2-2 for the two days and Razvan Jacobsen also wrestled 2-2 for the tournament.

Elgin will be on the road in Redmond starting Jan. 12 at the Oregon Classic. Union will also be on the road in Parma, Idaho, for the Padilla Tournament, also beginning Jan. 12. Imbler will take the weekend off before returning to action on Jan. 19 at the Grant Union tournament.

Bobcat girls top three at JO-HI

JOSEPH — Union picked up a top-three finish in the team standings at the JO-HI Tournament in Joseph on Saturday, Jan. 6.

Union trailed only Culver and champion Riverside in the team points as the Bobcats ended with 59 points. Culver tallied 71 points while Riverside put up 93 points.

Elgin picked up a top-five placing, finishing fifth with 49 points. Imbler placed 11th in the 17-team tournament.

The Union team total was led by two second-place showings. Madison Cathey, wrestling in the 98–106-pound division, picked up second place after wrestling to a 3-1 finish. In the 172-186 class, Hailey Wright also picked up second after a 2-1 finish.

The Bobcats also had Kari Stockhoff place third in the 110–115-pound division and McKennah Dempsy take fourh at 98-106 pounds.

Elgin had both Amber George and Jacie Lathrop place third at the tournament. George finished 3-1 for 116-127 pounds and Lathrop wrapped up her day also 3-1 in the 123-132-pound class.

Imbler’s lone wrestler, Lucy Camacho, was the individual champion in the 150-164 class, wrestling a perfect 4-0 on the day.

Union will be in Idaho beginning Jan. 12 for the Jaybird Memorial. Elgin takes some time away from competition, returning Jan. 27 for the Bank of Eastern Oregon Girls tournament where the Huskies will be joined by Imbler.
