College women’s wrestling: Mountaineers go 1-3 at NWCA National Duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The Eastern Oregon University women’s wrestling team took on a strong slate of opponents at the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa this weekend, going 1-3.

The Mountaineers earned a hard-fought win over Baker University, but lost to Texas Wesleyan, Indiana Tech, and William Penn University. The competitions brought the Mountaineers’ record in duals this season to 2-4.

Eastern Oregon 8, Texas Wesleyan 35

Eastern Oregon say an uphill battle in its first dual of the weekend, dropping to Texas Wesleyan by a score of 35-8.

The dual started with a forfeit at 101 that gave Texas Wesleyan a quick 6-0 lead. The ensuing six matchups went against Eastern Oregon, as Texas Wesleyan won by way of three tech falls, two falls, and one decision.

At the 155-pound division, Liv Wieber earned the Mountaineers’ first victory of the dual. She defeated Leilani Hernandez by a 4-0 decision.

After Texas Wesleyan took 170 by fall, Trinity Tafoya concluded the dual on a high note for the Mountaineers, winning by fall in a time of 1:10

Eastern Oregon 22, Indiana Tech 24

The second dual of the weekend was much closer for the Mountaineers, who fell in a nailbiter that came down to the last match.

The dual started with a forfeit at 101 pounds that gave Indiana Tech six points to start. The Warriors also won at 109, as Tehani Soares defeated Nayeli Flores Roque by fall.

After a slow start, Eastern Oregon bounced back with two consecutive wins. At 116, Irma Retano defeated Emma Jones by a 10-0 tech fall. Paige Chafin followed up at 123, defeating Andrea Hernandez by 14-11 decision.

After the Mountaineers lost at 130, Lexia Garza earned points at 136 by defeating Brooklyn Figueroa by way of fall in just 46 seconds.

Indiana Tech won at 143 by way of fall, but Eastern Oregon bounced back with consecutive wins at 155 and 170. Liv Wieber defeated Cydney Bassett by fall (1:22) and Anna McDougal took down Catherine McNulty by fall (1:12).

With the dual on the line, Indiana Tech’s Grace Doering defeated Tafoya by a 7-0 decision to tilt the dual in favor of the Warriors.

Eastern Oregon 32, Baker University 7

The Mountaineers found their stride in their third dual of the event, taking down Baker University 32-7.

After the match started with a double forfeit at 101, Flores Roque got things started with a 6-0 decision victory at 109 pounds.

Baker University took a win at 116 pounds by decision, but the Mountaineers responded by winning the ensuing six matches.

At 123, Chafin defeated Aaliyah Bueno by fall in 2:45. Anna Rodriguez took a victory at 130 pounds, winning by fall in a time of 5:11. Garza kept the momentum going at 136, defeating Belle Hernandez by fall in 2:58.

At 143 pounds, Madelyn Mazemke took down Reagan Wonnell by an 8-0 decision. The Mountaineers took a forfeit victory at 170, securing the match by a wide margin. Baker University took a tech fall victory at 191, but Eastern Oregon held a 32-7 advantage to take the victory in the dual.

Eastern Oregon 19, William Penn 23

In the final dual of the weekend, the Mountaineers dropped a narrow 23-19 loss to William Penn.

The dual started with a forfeit at 101 that gave William Penn six points to start. Flores Roque earned a 3-0 decision at 109 pounds to get Eastern Oregon on the score sheet.

At 116 pounds, Alexis Montes defeated Retano by way of an 8-2 decision to add to William Penn’s advantage. Chafin earned a bounce-back victory at 123 pounds, taking down Grecia Martinez by fall in a time of 1:37.

William Penn followed up with three consecutive wins, making it an uphill battle for Eastern Oregon. At 155, Wieber defeated Kylee Eastwood by fall in a time of 1:09, giving the Mountaineers a chance at a late comeback. However, William Penn’s Ashley Lekas earned a tech fall over McDougal at 170 that secured the dual for the Statesmen. Tafoya ended the dual with a victory by fall at 191 pounds, but it was too little too late as Eastern Oregon fell 23-19.

Coming off the busy weekend in Iowa, the Mountaineers are slated to travel to Redmond to compete at the Oregon Classic on Jan. 13.
