College women’s basketball: Mountaineers sweep weekend homestand

LA GRANDE — It was a productive weekend in La Grande, as the Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball program notched back-to-back wins in front of its home crowd.
The Mountaineers defeated Multnomah on Friday, February 9, before taking down Warner-Pacific the following day. The wins improved Eastern Oregon’s record to 16-6 on the year and 12-6 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
Eastern Oregon 87, Multnomah 64
A fast start set the tone for the Mountaineers in their first game of the weekend, as a double-digit lead by the end of the first quarter put Eastern Oregon in the driver’s seat. Eastern Oregon never trailed in the game, cruising on to win by 23.
The Mountaineers shot 9-17 (52.4%) in the opening frame and held Multnomah to just 5-19 (26.32%). Eastern Oregon built a 23-11 lead after the first frame that only grew in the second quarter. Bayley Brennan and Brie Holecek led the way with 11 points each in the first half, while Beverly Slater grabbed an impressive nine boards in the first two quarters. The Lions were limited to just 10-36 (27.8%) from the field in the first half, as the Mountaineers took a 48-24 lead into the break at halftime.
Eastern Oregon pushed the lead to upwards of 33 points midway through the third quarter, at which point the home team had the victory all but secured. The Mountaineers managed to play six bench players and maintain an 87-64 victory at the final whistle.
Brennan finished with a game-high 23 points, while Holecek finished with 18. Slater finished the day with 17 rebounds and nine points, just one point shy of a double-double. She helped the Mountaineers hold an impressive 49-31 advantage in team rebounding.
Eastern Oregon finished the day 28-58 (48.3%) from the field and shot 12-30 (40%) from three-point range. The Mountaineers capitalized off 26 points in the paint and 25 bench points.
Eastern Oregon 84, Warner Pacific 52
On the second day of a back-to-back, Eastern Oregon found a similar one-sided result.
Once again, the Mountaineers jumped out to a sizable lead out of the gates that set the tone for a victory. Eastern Oregon held an impressive 27-7 lead after the first frame and never trailed for the second straight game.
In the first half, Holecek led Eastern Oregon with 12 points, while Brennan contributed 11. Eastern Oregon shot 16-37 (43.2%) from the field and hit six three-pointers. Slater nabbed eight rebounds in the first half, as the Mountaineers went into the break leading 45-23.
The second half mirrored the second half of Eastern Oregon’s first game, as the team managed to hold onto its huge lead and emptied the bench. The Mountaineers outscored the Warriors 39-29 in the second half to walk away with an 84-52 win.
Slater finished the game with 14 rebounds, concluding the weekend with 31 boards. Holecek finished with a game-high 19 points, while Brennan scored 17 and Delaney Pink added 11.The Mountaineers scored 28 points in the paint and saw 29 bench points.
Coming off the successful weekend, Eastern Oregon is set to hit the road to Washington next weekend. Eastern Oregon will face Northwest at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 16 and Evergreen State College at 3 p.m. on Feb. 17.
