High school boys wrestling: Elgin claims two district titles, Bobcats one

ECHO — Pushed by individual titles from Landyn Fincher and Ty McLoughlin, Elgin finished fourth in the team standings at the 2A/1A District 3 wrestling tournament in Echo after two days of action ended on Saturday, Feb. 10.
Elgin finished the two days with 146 points, just four points better than Grant Union/Prairie City in fifth. Culver, compiling 257.5 points, was crowned the district champion, followed by Irrigon in second with 210.5 points. Enterprise/Wallowa picked up third place with 170 points.
Imbler managed a top-10 finish, placing ninth with 74 points, and will send two wrestlers to the state tournament.
Union/Cove, led by a district title by Sam Platz, placed 10th in the team standings with a total of 59 points.
Although just a freshman, Elgin’s Landyn Fincher claimed both a district championship and a berth to state after winning it all at 106 pounds. Fincher took a 17-1 technical fall victory over Imbler’s Evan Burns at the 3 minute, 10 second mark of the first-place match. Fincher is 30-2 for the year.
At 175 pounds and making his final trip to the state tournament, Ty McLaughlin won by pin over Grant Union/Prairie City’s Alex Finley at the 5:23 mark of the championship match.
The Husky wrestler makes the trip to Portland with a 34-4 mark for the season.
The lone Bobcat making a bid for a state title will also be a district champion. Wrestling in the 165-pound division, Sam Platz took a win over Crane’s Eli Maley with a pin at 1:48 in the match, upping his season record to 30-9.
The following local wrestlers qualified for the OSAA Class 2A/1A state tournament Feb. 22-24 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Portland:
106 pounds: Landyn Fincher, Elgin, 2A/1A Special District 3 Champion
106 pounds: Evan Burns, Imbler
132 pounds: Kadin Allen, Elgin
150 pounds: Anthony Pallis, Imbler
157 pounds: Gen Wintersteen, Elgin
165 pounds: Sam Platz, Union/Cove, 2A/1A Special District 3 Champion
175 pounds: Ty McLaughlin, Elgin, 2A/1A Special District 3 Champion
