College baseball: EOU offense struggles against Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. — Joey Freitas tallied five RBIs in the second game Saturday, propelling the Mounties to a 7-2 victory over Whitworth. The Pirates had started the season 11-0 before Sunday’s defeat at the hands of Eastern Oregon.
Parker Cumberland’s homer giving EOU a one-run advantage in the fifth inning, and the momentum continued in the seventh as Freitas smacked a homer, bringing in two runs and extending the Mountaineers’ lead to 5-2.
EOU dropped the first game 7-2 with Freitas and Youhyeon Choi had two hits apiece.
Whitworth won the opening game of the series, 8-3, on Friday. Mario Landeros had a run scoring double and scored a run. Trevor Baker had an RBI single.
The Mountaineers are now 9-13 on the season and opens conference play with a pair of doubleheaders against Bushnell on March 16-17.
