LA GRANDE — The No. 24 Eastern Oregon softball team won two of three games over No. 1 Oregon Tech over the weekend.
On Saturday, the Mountaineers opened action by earning a 2-1, walk-off victory in eight innings and drubbed the Owls 10-0 in the second game that was postponed until Sunday because of weather. EOU would fall 3-1 in the finale on Sunday. The second game of the doubleheader was snowed out.
Gates Leatherwood stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and delivered in the clutch, smashing a walk-off two-run homer to left field to secure the win in the opener. Pitching was a key factor in the game as Kaylie Hoskins threw a complete game, allowing only one earned run on eight hits while striking out nine batters.
EOU scored four runs in the first inning of the second game and five in the fourth to go up 10-0 and end the game after five innings. Madelyn Durham drove in two runs with a double in the first inning and Haley Tyree smoked a solo home run in the second inning. Both hitters and had a pair of hits in the contest. Kylie Parsons picked five innings of two-hit softball and struck out five.
Oregon Tech scored the come-from-behind win in the finale, scoring all three runs in the seventh inning. A solo home run followed by a two-run shot provided all of the offense.
Tyree drove in Carlee Jensen with a triple to right field for the Mounties’ lone run of the game in the fifth inning.
EOU is now 9-3 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. The Mountaineers travel to Salem next weekend for a pair of doubleheaders against Corbin.
