High school track and field: Panthers, Badgers, Bobcats kickoff season at Ontario Ice Breaker

- Imbler senior Trevor Treat was the first leg of the Panthers’ 4-by-100 relay team, a squad finishing second only to the Vale team, on March 14, 2024, during the Ontario Ice Breaker.
ONTARIO — Track and field athletes representing Imbler, Powder Valley and Union received their first taste of competition as the Ontario Ice Breaker kicked of the season on Thursday, March 14, at Ontario High School.
Arriving with over 50 competitors, the Imbler girls finished second in the team standings and the boys took seventh in the team points.
Imbler junior Paiten Braseth started the season off with two top finishes. Invividually, Braseth was the top finisher in the 800 meters, crossing the line in 2 minutes, 34.24 seconds. The Panther then joined freshman Paige Braseth, junior Kiana deLint and senior Avonlee Crook to win the 4-by-400 relay with a time of 4:40.09. Paige Braseth also finished second in the 1,500 meters, while freshman Jo Bingaman won the triple jump competition with a measurement of 30 feet, 6 inches.
The Imbler boys were led by Razvan Jacobson and his second-place showing in the 800 meters. The Panthers also picked up second place in both the 4-by-100 relay and the 4-by-400 relay. The 4-by-100 squad was all seniors comprised of Trevor Treat, Jake Bingaman, Dallin Rasmussen and Clinton Tarvin. Treat, Rasmussen and Tarvin joined junior Adam Gordon for the 4-by-400 relay squad.
The Powder Valley girls finished the meet tied with Adrian for sixth in the team standings, while the boys ended the meet in a 12th-place tie with Four Rivers.
The sprint events were strong for the Powder Valley girls as senior Ayla Bingham placed second in the 100 meters and then upped her standing to first place in the 200 meters, crossing the line in 27.38 seconds. Bingham completed her day joining teammates senior Jacey Anderson and sophomores Sky Nesser and Sammy Gressley for second in the 4-by-100 relay.
The top finish for the Powder Valley boys was fourth place in the discus event by senior Caleb Kerns, who had a throw of 111 feet, 3 inches.
Both the Union boys and girls grabbed top-five team finishes with both squads placing fifth in the team scores.
Freshman Sawyer Shoemaker made the most of her first high school meet, placing second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.13 seconds. Junior Kaelyn Shoemaker also picked up a second place showing, hers coming in the triple jump with a leap of 30 feet, 5 inches. The elder Shoemaker also placed third in the discus event.
Senior Amos Lewis boarded the bus back to Union with a first place in the discus event and a second place in the shot put. His throw of 125 feet, 2 inches in the discus was the best of the day.
Sophomore Jackson Davenport also had a second place finish as his time in the 110-meter hurdles ended in a time of 17.18 seconds for second place.
