UNION — For the third time in three days, the Union/Cove baseball team picked up wins over Weston-McEwen in 2A/1A Special District 7 action on Thursday, April 4. The doubleheader, originally scheduled for April 5 was moved up one day in an attempt to evade an incoming storm.

“We had a window in the weather and got the two games in,” Union/Cove head coach Greg Poor said.

Needing only five innings in both games, the Bobcats took the first game by a 14-2 score and held Weston-McEwen/Griswold scoreless in the nightcap, winning 10-0.

Micah Jayne picked up a no-hitter in the opener, striking out nine batters. Keeping the pitching in the family, brother Jonah Jayne took the win in the nightcap, striking out five batters while allowing only two hits by the TigerScots.

“We had really good outings from both brothers,” Poor said.

The opener saw the Bobcats jump on the scoreboard quickly.

In the bottom of the first inning, Morgan Johnson singled, scoring two runs. Derek Miller then singled, scoring another run followed by Wyatt Burgess drawing a walk, again with a runner crossing home plate. The scoring continued after Maverick Tidwell-Stone was struck by a pitch and Jonah Jayne’s ground out scored an additional run.

Union/Cove added three additional runs to its total in the bottom of the second inning and added four runs in the third inning.

Miller and Kade McLean each recorded three RBIs for the game.

Game two saw the Bobcats taking a walk to the bases a total of eight times while also picking up eight stolen bases. The defense also turned a double play in the victory.

Union/Cove (4-4 overall, 3-0 2A/1A Special District 7) departs district play for a couple games starting with a home game versus 3A Vale (0-7 overall) on April 10. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
