High school baseball roundup: Union/Cove grounds Rockets in district play

UNION — Union/Cove picked up the team’s fourth straight victory on Tuesday, April 23, taking care of Pilot Rock, 9-4.
Morgan Johnson and Micah Jayne combined on the mound for the win as the Bobcats rose to 7-0 in district play.
“We did a really good job of putting the ball in play today,” Bobcats coach Greg Poor said.
Union/Cove (8-7 overall, 7-0 2A/1A Special District 7) will have the chance to replicate the victory as the Bobcats will be at Pilot Rock (7-6 overall, 1-4 2A/1A Special District 7) on April 27 for two games.
Three teams, including Union/Cove, are currently without a district loss. Joining Union/Crane in the unbeaten listing is Heppner/Ione and Grant Union/Prairie City/Monument.
Weston-McEwen/Griswold 15, Elgin 0
ATHENA — The Elgin baseball continues the quest for the first win of the year after a trip to Athena on Tuesday, April 23, resulted in a loss.
Weston-McEwen/Griswold needed only five innings to shutout the visiting Huskies 15-0.
In a quick turnaround, Elgin (0-8 overall, 0-8 2A/1A Special District 7) is back on the bus on April 24 with a trip to Pilot Rock (7-6 overall, 1-4 2A/1A Special District 7). An earlier meeting of the two teams on April 9 saw the Rockets roll to a 25-0 win.
