Russell N. Thoreson, 81, of Haines, died June 22 at Grande Ronde Hospital.

A private memorial service will take place later. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Thoreson was born Oct. 20, 1919, in Minnesota. He moved with his family to Gresham, where he enlisted in the Army. He served during World War II. He was a heavy equipment operator for many years.

He married Maxine Boese on Nov. 30, 1979, in Portland. They moved to Eastern Oregon. He was a member of the VFW and the Elks Lodge for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.

Besides his wife, he is survived by children, John Thoreson of John Day, David Cannon of Cascade Locks, Sam Snyder of Gresham, and Sonja Lyman of Baker City; a brother, 12 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. A sister and two brothers died earlier.

Violet Eggebrecht

La Grande

Violet Eggebrecht, 72, of La Grande, died June 25 at Grande Ronde Hospital.

There will be no public service.

Mrs. Eggebrecht was born Sept. 4, 1928, in Joseph to Henry F. and Ina E. Estes Christy. She married Donald Eggebrecht on March 10, 1959, in Pasco, Wash. He died July 1, 2000.

She lived in Milton-Freewater for years before moving to Meacham and then to

La Grande in December 1987.

She was a telephone operator and later a bookkeeper for various businesses. She enjoyed reading, roses and birdwatching. She was a loving mother to her four daughters and was proud of her Irish heritage, family members said.

She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Connie and John Collins of La Grande, Rebecca and John Ripple of Lexington, Vicky and Mark Nicholson of Moses Lake, Wash., and Deborah Eggebrecht of Lebanon; a brother, Phillip Christy of Adams; four grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter; and other relatives.

Her sister, Mabel Wilcox, and brothers, Raymond, Dutch and Jack Christy, died

earlier.

La Grande

Mary Ellen Crader, 63, of La Grande, died June 25 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley with Dan Mielke of the Union Baptist Church officiating. A private burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St.

Mrs. Crader was born Oct. 27, 1937, the youngest of 18 children, to James Monroe and Alice May White Palmer in La Grande. On Oct. 26, 1955, she married Vernon Bud Crader in La Grande. The couple lived in Los Angeles and other places before returning to La Grande.

She was a member of the Eagles auxiliary and enjoyed bingo, crafts, crocheting, needlepoint, decorating her home at Christmas time and working at her computer. She enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she owned many collectibles.

Survivors include her husband of La Grande; their children, Anita and Ken Young of Portland, Debbie and Dennis Crisp of Canby, Vernon Jr. and Kathy Crader of Union, Denise Crader and John Bramley of La Grande; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; seven brothers and sisters; and other relatives. Ten brothers and sisters died earlier.

Arnold Edvalson

Arnold Patrick Edvalson, 92, of Union, died June 23 at his home. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Union Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dedication of the grave will follow at the Union Cemetery.

Viewing will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St.

Mr. Edvalson was born Jan. 1, 1909, to Carl Patrick and Cecilia Isaacson Edvalson in Emmett, Idaho. The family lived in the Mount Glenn area before moving to a farm on Catherine Creek. He graduated from Union High School and married Dorothea Harrison on Oct. 24, 1941, at the family farm. He was a past member of the Oregon Wheat Growers Association and loved farming. He enjoyed gardening, sharing his flowers, the outdoors, telling stories, car rides, helping others and spending time with his family. He had a keen sense of humor and enjoyed serving his church and community.

Survivors include Avery and Marjorie Glenn of Provo, Utah, Clayton and Blanche Glenn of Gladstone, Patrick and Vivian Edvalson of Richland, Wash., Judy and Jim Thompson of Yakima, Wash., 22 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. His wife, a son, Michael, and his sisters died earlier.

Keith D. Johnston, 57, of La Grande, died June 16 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene from complications resulting from a car accident June 11 in which his wife and granddaughter died. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m Saturday at Catherine Creek State Park. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnston was born Aug. 22, 1943, to Charles and Gussie Nelson Johnston in Prineville. He served in the Navy and married Stacey Jarvis on Nov. 9, 1960, in Sutherlin. He supervised the operation of rock crushers, operated heavy equipment, owned his own flatbed truck and worked as a logger in many places in Oregon. He enjoyed his work, camping, traveling and his family.

Survivors include his daughters, Donnalynn Hubbell of Seaside, Pam Johnston of Eastern Oregon, Margie Chadwick of Summerville, Marlene Johnston of Durkee and Tomi Johnston of La Grande; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and other relatives. Six brothers, two sisters and other relatives died earlier.

Stacey Johnston

La Grande

Eustacia M. Stacey Johnston, 58, of La Grande, died June 11 in a car accident in which her granddaughter also died. Her husband died five days later. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Catherine Creek State Park. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Johnston was born Nov. 17, 1942, to Charles and Marjorie Kinrade Jarvis in Eureka, Calif. She married Keith Dee Wayne Johnston on Nov. 9, 1960, in Sutherlin. She was a mother and housewife and enjoyed growing flowers, working in her yard, shopping, camping, traveling and being with her family.

Survivors include her daughters, Donnalynn Hubbell of Seaside, Pam Johnston of Eastern Oregon, Margie Chadwick of Summerville, Marlene Johnston of Durkee, and Tomi Johnston of La Grande; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; her mother; and other relatives. Two brothers died earlier.

Rustie Jean Thomas

Rustie Jean Thomas, 16, of Seaside, died June 11 in a car accident in which her grandmother, Stacey Johnston also died. Her grandfather, Keith Johnston died of complications five days later. Miss Thomas was born June 28, 1984, to Tommy and Donnalynn Thomas in La Grande. She attended Seaside High School where she was a senior. She enjoyed choir, art, the outdoors, working with children and model cars.

Survivors include her parents, Donnalynn and Rick Hubbell of Seaside and Tommy and La Dene Thomas of Kent, Wash.; her brother, Jacobe Alan Thomas; a half brother and two step-sisters; her grandparents, Faye and Allen Thomas; two great-grandmothers; one step-grandmother; and other relatives.

Mary E. Stewart, 86, of La Grande, died June 26 at a local care center. A service will begin at noon Friday at the Green Valley Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Poway, Calif. Dedication of the grave and burial will

Mrs. Stewart was born Sept. 16, 1914, to Walter M. and Sarah A. Patten King in Salt Lake City. Following high school she worked at a radio station in the

Los Angeles area as a pianist. She married Quentin Stewart on March 17, 1944, in Detroit, Mich. She was the director of choral groups that entertained at nursing homes and other places around San Diego. She moved to La Grande six years ago to be near family. She enjoyed music, sailing and spending time with her family.

She was a member of the Mormon church.

Survivors include her children and their families, Marilyn Stewart of McLean, Va., Mary and Lloyd Royer of La Grande, Quentin and Barbara Stewart of Houston, Jennene and Gary Aten of Suisun City, Calif., Dr. James and Margie Stewart of San Antonio, Texas, Virginia and Chuck Alexander of San Diego, 27 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her husband and two grandchildren died earlier.

Reta Stussi

La Grande

Reta May Stussi, 88, of

La Grande, died June 27 at a local care center. A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., with Michael Stevenson of the Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow at Island City Cemetery.

Mrs. Stussi was born April 8, 1913, in Portland and raised by her grandmother and step-grandfather in Rude near Monument. She married John Stussi on April 25, 1930, in John Day. The couple had a ranch in Hamilton and later at Long Creek before running a store for a time. She cooked for various ranches before becoming a mail carrier on the Stage Route from Long Creek to Ritter. She retired after 25 years.

She was a member of the Long Creek Community Church and active in church work. She enjoyed embroidery and was an excellent cook.

Survivors include her daughters, Lola Chapman of La Grande, Donna Amos of Island City and Ruth Weeger of Kennewick, Wash.; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Sally Herburger of Mount Vernon; and other relatives. Her husband and two sisters died earlier.

Erica Beth Williams, 22, of Adrian and formerly of La Grande and Elgin, died June 25. A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bramlett Cemetery in Wallowa.

Miss Williams was born Nov. 17, 1978, to Stephen Ray and Linda Cameron Williams in La Grande. She attended school in Elgin until 1993 when the family moved to Lewiston, Idaho, where she graduated from high school. She worked as a veterinary assistant at a small animal clinic. She enjoyed traveling, loved animals and her family, and never met a stranger.

Survivors include her mother of Lewiston; a brother, Andy of Elgin; two sisters and their husbands, Kristy and Junior Day of Lewiston, and Brandi and Ken Connors of Salem; her maternal grandmother, Georgia Cameron of Adrian; paternal grandparents, Fred and Betty Williams of Wallowa; her paternal great-grandmother, Josephine Graf of Wallowa; and other relatives. Her father and maternal grandfather, John Cameron, both died earlier.

Nancy Hein

Elgin

Nancy Hein, 68, of Elgin, died June 27 at her home. At her request there will be no public service. She will be buried in Cottage Grove Cemetery along side her son. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hein was born Dec. 24, 1932, to Hayden Steele and Annabell Hertzog Smith Fisher in Portland. She married Phil Price in May of 1949, and after a divorce she married Eldon Hendricks in 1951. After a second divorce, she married Kenny Hein in 1974. She had moved to Elgin in 1971 and was a short order cook, bartender and waitress for Odies in Elgin for many years. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and crocheting.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Jane Buchanan of Elgin, Jody and John Hallgarth of Elgin, William and Ilene Price of Cottage Grove; six grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Heverlein of Gresham; and other relatives. Three brothers died earlier.

Harold Soles

Union

1924-2001

Harold Soles, 76, died Friday at his home in Union.

A gathering of family and friends will be at 2 p.m. July 6 at the Union United Methodist Church fellowship hall. Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. today at Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Mr. Soles was born Aug. 28, 1924, to William and Dottie McCloughan Soles in Millsboro, S.D. He attended school in South Dakota.

On July 16, 1948, he married Lois Crawford in Crouch, Idaho.

He worked as a logger for various companies until his retirement.

In 1960, the Soleses moved to Union. Mr. Soles was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting, working in his yard and gathering alfalfa by hand.

Survivors include his wife of Union; sons and daughters-in-law, William E. and Linda Soles of Hermiston and Jesse and Sharlayne Soles of La Grande; daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Frank Michaels of North Powder; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and brother and sisters, Velma Welsh of Silverton, Woodrow Bud Soles and George Soles of Millsboro, Frank Soles and Pearl Chamber of Winter, S.D., Helen Michael of Nampa, Idaho, Ellen Gosling of Emmett, Idaho, Mary Heifer of Mount Angel, and Annie Culver of Greenfield, Mo.; and other relatives. A brother, Lewis, died earlier.

Margaret Helen Wall

La Grande

Margaret Helen Wall, 84, of La Grande died June 29 in Astoria.

A graveside service will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday at Grandview Cemetery in La Grande with Pastor Mark Schlessman of the First Christian Church officiating.

Mrs. Wall was born July 16, 1916, in Decker, Mont., to Frank and Millie McKinney. She grew up in Montana and moved to La Grande in about 1940.

She married Rex William Wall in 1947 in La Grande.

Mrs. Wall was a registered nurse and provided private nursing care in this area for many years.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, the Nurses Association, the Elks Club and the La Grande Golf and Country Club. She was an avid golfer.

She is survived by a daughter, Carmen Miller of Portland; a son, Mike Wall of South Jordan, Utah; and a granddaughter, Vanessa Wall. Her husband died earlier.

Dorothy M. Duckworth, 81, of Wallowa, died July 4 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at the Christian Church in Wallowa with Mel Byers officiating. Burial under the auspices of Eastern Star will be at Bramlet Cemetery in Wallowa. Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Duckworth was born May 28, 1920, to Edgar R. and Pearl Borton Laughlin in Baker City. She married John Edward Duckworth Jan. 23, 1941, at Twin Falls, Idaho. She was a homemaker, a volunteer weather observer for the National Weather Service, a 52-year member of the American Legion Kruse Post, past treasurer of the Jessica Chapter 68 of Eastern Star and a life member of the Royal Neighbors of America.

Survivors include her son, John E. Duckworth of Wallowa. Her husband died earlier.

Donald Haefer

Union

Donald Glenn Haefer, 76, of Union, died July 2 at a care center in La Grande. A celebration of life will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., with Pastor Forrest Turner of Life Exchange Ministries of Cove officiating. Burial will follow at Cove Cemetery. Viewing will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today.

Mr. Haefer was born Sept. 15, 1924, to William and Ida Irvin Haefer at High Valley. He attended school in Cove and served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. He married Wilma Jane Timpy on June 27, 1948, in Cove. He worked breaking horses and on farms and ranches in his youth and then for 30 years he drove heavy equipment at both sawmills in Union until his retirement in 1989.

He enjoyed fishing, country music and picking huckleberries. His name is in the Boone and Crockett records for killing in 1961 the second largest cougar in Oregon.

Survivors include his children, Gary D. Haefer, Shelley Boucher and Lori Woosley, all of La Grande; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a sister, Berna Jean Harsin of Union; and other relatives. His wife, three half-brothers, Earl, Claude and Hollis Hetrick, one half-sister, Leila Moore, four brothers, Willard, August, Royal and Elvin Haefer, and a sister, Freda Haney, all died earlier.

Herbert Stinson

Herbert Frances Stinson, 89, of Irrigon and formerly of Halfway, died July 4.

A religious service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise, with Archie Hook officiating. Burial will be in the Lostine Cemetery.

Mr. Stinson was born Nov. 5, 1911, to Charles Herbert and Martha Ann Hoffman Stinson at Halfway.

He served in the Army during World War II and married Ruby Fordyce.

Survivors include a nephew, Ted Hays, of Irrigon. His wife died

earlier.

Margueriette Richards

La Grande

1913 – 2001

Memorial services were today at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of La Grande for longtime La Grande resident and educator Margueriette Richards.

Mrs. Richards was born Oct. 1, 1913, to Edna and William Hesse in Weldona, Colo., the middle child of three. Her parents moved to this area before she entered La Grande High School. She graduated with the Class of 1932.

She entered Eastern Oregon Normal School to study education and after graduation, her first teaching job was a one-room schoolhouse in Aleville, in central Morrow County. She moved to the Milton-Freewater area soon after, where she taught for many years.

She subsequently moved to the Sweet Home school district. She retired from teaching in 1975 and continued to live an active life in retirement, traveling frequently.

She had many hobbies, including weaving, knitting, ceramics, beadwork and other crafts. She particularly enjoyed dancing and was a familiar sight at many senior activity dances both in Oregon and in Yuma, Ariz., where she and her husband frequently wintered.

Margueriette celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary with her husband, Cecil, last year on May 25 at the La Grande Senior Center.

She received many honors for her community and professional activities, including election to Alpha Delta Kappa, a sorority recognizing excellence in education.

She is survived by her husband of La Grande, son Nicholas of Gautier, Miss., brother William Hesse of Milton-Freewater, two granddaughters of San Diego, and the thousands of schoolchildren she taught.

Clyde Simmons

Joseph

Clyde H. Simmons, 91, of Joseph, died July 6 at a care center in Spokane.

The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise.

Burial will follow at Prairie Creek Cemetery.

Mr. Simmons was born Dec. 4, 1909, to Orie and Mildred Lamb Simmons in Alberta, Canada. He married Jeanette Huffman, and after her death in 1996, he

married Rose Briggs. He was a rancher.

Survivors include his wife of Joseph; a daughter, Rhonda Winters of Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington; and five grandchildren.
