College track & field: Eastern Oregon competes at Whitworth Peace Meet

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Eastern Oregon University Track & Field team competed at the Whitworth Peace Meet this weekend, with the Mountaineers hauling in 20 top-5 finishes.

Men’s events

Bryson Spears led the way for Eastern Oregon, placing third in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 53.53. His time earned him an automatic qualification to the NAIA Championships and ranks in the top-10 in the program’s record book. Spears had a busy day, helping Eastern Oregon’s 4×100 meter relay team take second overall. He also placed fifth in the 100 meters with a time of 11.12.

The Mountaineers had a productive day in the 100-meter hurdles, taking three top-10 finishes. Israel Miles led the pack with a third-place finish at 15.39. Mason Nichols was just behind in fourth at 15.52 and Evan Gunning placed eighth with a personal-best time of 16.65.

In the 400, Osman Osman placed second with a time of 48.86. Evan Mesenhimer-Molet placed 10th at 51.36.

In addition to Spears’ top performance in the 400-meter hurdles, Evan Gunning placed fifth with a time of 56.62.

Eastern Oregon saw two top-five finishes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase — Hunter Nichols (9:18.44) placed third and Justin Ash (9:20.21) took fourth place.

March Church threw 45.81 meters in the discus throw, placing sixth. In the shot put, Church placed 10th at 13.91 meters and Tanner Nett took home second with a throw of 16.47 meters.

The Mountaineers saw success in the high jump, as Tyler Jones won the event with a leap of 1.97 meters. TJ Davis placed fourth at 1.87 meters. Jones led the way in the long jump with a fifth-place finish at 6.67 meters, while Wilson took 10th at 6.30 meters.In the javelin, DJ Wilson placed 10th at 46.68 meters.

Eastern Oregon rounded out the day with a fourth-place finish in the 4×400 meter relay, clocking in at 3:24.46.

Women’s events

Eastern Oregon took two top-10 placements in the 100 meters, as Karina DeYoung placed sixth at 12.56 and Katie Brown took ninth at 12.66. In the 100-meter hurdles, Lizzy Grandle placed seventh with a time of 15.42, a new personal record. Skotlyn Hill placed 10th at 15.80.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Skotlyn Hill placed fourth at 1:05.37. Sydney Peck placed sixth with a time of 1:06.32.

Riley Morris set a new personal record in the 1,500 meters, clocking in at 4:43.60. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Sadie McCoy placed seventh at 12:12.65. Kaleah Hines placed eighth in the 5,000 meters, with a new personal-best time of 19:44.01.

In the hammer throw, Kenna Woodward placed third with a throw of 47.49 meters. Trinity Hill placed eighth at 44.02 meters, a new personal record. Woodward also placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 12.26 meters.

The Mountaineers saw three top-10 placements in the javelin throw. Lilly McCargar set a new personal record with a throw of 39.05 meters to place fourth overall. Sammy Conley threw 38.39 meters, taking sixth. Lizzy Grandle took home ninth with a throw of 36.68 meters.

In the pole vault, Taylor Joyce placed seventh at 3.15 meters, while Harlee Grant took eighth at 2.85 meters.

Eastern Oregon’s 4×100 meter relay team placed third with a time of 3:24.46. The Mountaineers’ 4×400 meter relay clocked in at 4:09.64 to place fifth.

Following the Whitworth Peace Meet, the Mountaineers will travel to the Larry Byerly Invite in Portland and the Northwest Nazarene Invite in Nampa, Idaho. Both events take place on April 13.
