UNION — A week between games may not have been the best idea for the Union/Cove softball team and coach Madison Barr.
After one week between hitting the field, the LadyCats saw 3A Wallowa Valley visit Union and take a 12-5 nonleague victory on Tuesday, April 23.
“It was good to be back on the dirt after a week off,” Barr said. “While the result did not go out way, there was some good softball by both teams.”
Cabella Gregory recorded the loss on the mound for Union/Cove but did some damage with the bat, going 3-for-4.
“Freshman Avi Allen and Sofia Garcia played some great defense in the outfield,” Barr said.
The Outlaws are currently seventh in the 3A OSAA rankings.
Union/Cove (6-9 overall, 2-4 2A/1A Special District 7) returns to district action for the first time since April 12 with a trip to Irrigon (2-11 overall, 0-6 2A/1A Special District 7) on April 26 for two games.
The LadyCats are currently fourth in the district standings with Weston-McEwen/Griswold, Heppner/Ione/Condon and Grant Union/Prairie City all sporting undefeated district records.
Grant Union 19, Elgin/Imbler 1
ELGIN — Similar to a previous game on April 16, the Elgin/Imbler softball team fell to the top-ranked 2A/1A team in the state, Grant Union/Prairie City, on Tuesday, April 23, in Elgin.
The Prospectors roared into town, claiming a 19-1 victory in a game called after six innings due to the “mercy rule.”
The previous meeting of the two teams saw Grant Union/Prairie City down Elgin/Imbler, 18-2, on April 16.
Elgin/Imbler (4-10 overall, 2-6 2A/1A Special District 7) looks to break a three-game skid on April 27 with two league games on the road against Echo/Stanfield (6-11 overall, 2-6 2A/1A Special District 7). The two team are currently tied for fifth in the district standings.
