Vector Control is on our ballots again this year. I’ve written in opposition to Vector Control for the past 24 years. The deadly broad-spectrum chemicals formerly used have largely been replaced by more targeted, often organic larvicides and insecticides.

Vector Control personnel travel around the valley to locate and kill mosquitoes. Landowners are not asked or notified. If you want them to stay off your land, you must contact them. The office number is 541-963-2974. Be persistent or leave a message.

There are many ways to Fight the Bite without widespread killing. Wear light-colored, long clothing and apply insect repellent. Vaccinate vulnerable animals. Put up bird boxes.

Remember, biodiversity requires intact food chains/webs. Literally tons of insects are needed to feed species further up their food chain: birds, reptiles and other insects. Nature evolves to keep life in balance. We interfere at our own peril.

Ponds of water on my property encourage insect reproduction. Yet, I’m rarely bothered by mosquitoes because birds and bats Fight the Bite best.
