High school softball: Tigers see end of season to familiar foe

PENDLETON — That dreaded trip to Pendleton once again ended in disappointment for the La Grande softball team.

The Buckaroos ended the Tiger season, 13-6, in 4A softball playoff action on Friday, May 24. The Tigers close out the season with a 19-4 record with all four losses coming to the Buckaroos.

Pendleton opened the scoring in the game early with a two-run homer in the first inning.

The Buckaroos extended the margin to 4-0 off a single to center field.

The Tigers cut into the lead in the third inning with two runs and went on to take a 6-4 lead in the fourth after Carlee Strand belted a two-run double. Austyn Meuser then added a two-run home run.

The sixth inning was the demise of La Grande. Giving up eight runs in the bottom of the inning, La Grande saw its lead turn to a 12-6 deficit in an inning that saw a grand slam.

For the game, the Tigers scattered 13 hits while tallying four errors. Carlee Strand pitched the initial 4-1/3 innings, allowing 10 hits while striking out two Pendleton batters. In relief, Meuser closed out the game, facing 10 batters and allowing two hits.

With the season finished, La Grande posts impressive numbers for a successful season. As a team, the Tigers batted a .432 average with 284 hits, including 42 home runs and 224 RBIs. In 129 innings played, the La Grande defense committed only 21 errors.
