JOHN DAY — Facing the top 2A/1A team in the state, the Union/Cove softball team saw a two-game win streak end in John Day with Grant Union/Prairie City holding the LadyCats to a single run and the Prospectors taking a 15-1 victory in a rule shortened five inning game.
“We had a lot of really good things from the LadyCats against a really strong Prospector team,” Union/Cove head coach Madison Barr said. “I could not have been more proud of how we showed up today regardless of the final score.”
The game appeared good for Union/Cove early as Amanda Lawyer doubled in the first inning with two outs. Lawyer placed the lone run on the board for Union/Cove off a single up the middle by Kali Amy.
Strong pitching from the Prospectors subsequently shut down further scoring by the LadyCats and the Grant Union/Prairie City bats then went into action.
Union/Cove (8-10 overall, 4-5 2A/1A Special District 7) returns home on May 3 after a three-game road journey to take on Echo/Stanfield (8-11 overall, 4-6 2A/1A Special District 7) in a doubleheader. Game one begins with an early 10:30 a.m. start.
Union/Cove currently sits fourth in the district standings with the Cougars one spot behind in fifth.
