HERMISTON — The Union County Special Olympics Oregon team recently took part in — and had success in — the regional track meet June 10 in Hermiston, bringing home 13 gold medals and eight silvers from the competition.

“As we are still rebuilding our local program, we are beyond proud of all the athletes and volunteers who have worked so hard this year,” co-coordinator Lis Thorne said. “We could not do it without them.”

Leading the way for the team were two athletes who both earned two golds — Alex Koiv and Jamie McClaughtry. Koiv took first place in the 100-meter dash and the shot put, and McClaughry was first in both the 100- and 800-meter walk.

Four athletes earned a gold and a silver each. Jason Franks won gold in the softball throw and silver in the 800-meter walk, with Amanda Hebert earning the opposite — gold in the 800-meter walk and silver in the softball throw. Ron Morton won gold in the 400-meter dash and silver in the long jump, and Jasmine Zaplishny won gold in the 100-meter motor wheelchair race and silver in the softball throw.

Gold and bronze went to five athletes. Jaxen Roberts earned gold in the softball throw and bronze in the 200-meter dash, and Autumn Rush won her division of softball throw and bronze in the 100-meter walk. Dani Thorne won gold in the 800-meter dash and bronze in the softball throw, and R’Anne Werner earned gold in the softball throw and bronze in the 100-meter dash. Rounding out the gold and bronze winners was Jennifer Coppin, earning gold in the 100-meter walk and bronze in the softball throw.

Pete Crowell won two silvers, one in the 100-meter walk and one in the softball throw. Dennis Adams earned silver in the softball throw, and a participation ribbon in the 100-meter walk. Judy Asper earned silver in the softball throw. Joey Gross rounded out the individual awards with a bronze in the shot put, and was also fourth in the 100-meter dash.

In the 4-by-100-meter relay, Gross, Koiv, Roberts and Morton earned bronze.

The golf team on June 25 collected three gold medals at the regional tournament in Oregon City.

Gold winners were Brad Culver, Mandi Durfee and Alex Weissenfluh. Earning silver was the team of Ian Altenburg and Patrick Vaughn. Bronze winners Brandon Cooper and the team of Remy Spangler and Larry Bare. And in fourth was the team of Nick Mendiguren and Sylvain Harton.
