Letter: Counties considering Greater Idaho move need facts from leaders

Published 5:15 am Tuesday, July 18, 2023

Prior to any decisions about Oregon counties joining Idaho, I believe counties need facts from our current public administrators. Greater Idaho Group (GIG) now has 13 counties in Eastern Oregon where voters have passed ordinances requiring their county commissioners to meet from two to four times a year to discuss this issue.

Prior to any decision we need more “specifics.” I am suggesting at this point the county leaders (county commissioners) talk to the other elected leaders in their county offices to obtain information on how they and the county would be affected if we moved an Oregon county into Idaho. This would specifically mean seeking perspective from those such as the county assessor, clerk, prosecutor, etc.

Currently we just hear the “nays” and “yeas” from a few individuals at meetings a few times a year. We need the facts from our current public administrators. Then our commissioners can educate their constituents and thus make a decision.
