NORTH POWDER — Oregon State Police are investigating a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 84 that resulted in the death of a North Powder man on Wednesday,

Aug. 16.

Just after 5 a.m. police responded to a report of a crash on I-84 near milepost 275 where Robert Floyd, 60, was declared dead at the scene, according to a news release from Oregon State Police.

The preliminary investigation by OSP indicated that Ilker Ozgur, 30, of Woodside, New York, was driving a Volvo with a trailer in the westbound lane when Ozgur lost control, according to the news release. The vehicle flipped onto the passenger side before coming to a stop with the trailer blocking the fast lane.

State police reported that Robert Floyd, who was driving a Volkswagen Beetle in the westbound lane, collided with the crashed trailer and was ejected from the car.

Jeffrey Floyd, 61, of Goose Creek, South Carolina, was also traveling in the westbound lane in a Freightliner with a trailer. The Freightliner struck the crashed Volvo trailer, causing it to enter the median.

A third commercial motor vehicle — a Peterbilt and trailer operated by Jerry Gray, 61, of North Powder — passing the crash site was also damaged, according to OSP. The Peterbilt hit debris in the roadway and was inoperable.

Jeffery Floyd was transported to a local hospital for injuries, according to the release. Ozgur was assessed for injuries at the scene and declined medical transport. Gray was not injured.

The highway was closed for approximately nine hours during the investigation, according to the news release. The initial Volvo crash is still under investigation, as are the secondary crashes involving the Volvo trailer.

La Grande Police Department, La Grande Fire Department and Oregon Department of Transportation provided assistance.
