BAKER CITY — The Powder River Practical Shooters, an affiliate of the United States Practical Shooting Association, invites people interested in improving their handgun skills to contact the club.

If a handful of people express interest, the group, part of the Powder River Sportsmen’s Club, will schedule a free “Introduction to USPSA” seminar at the Virtue Flat range about 6 miles east of Baker City.

Participants need to have a handgun (9 mm or larger), belt, holster, three magazines or speedloaders with belt pouches, 50 rounds of ammunition, and eye and hearing protection.

Despite 100-degree weather on July 23, a Powder River Sportsmen’s Club shooting match attracted 13 people, ranging in age from 17 to 70. Five were first-time shooters, including three women.

Those interested can call Phil O’Connell at 208-850-1313 or David Spaugh at 541-519-7417 for more information. Beginning shooters should read chapters 3, 5, 8 and 10 of the USPSA competition rules booklet, available for free at uspsa.org/rules.
