College women’s soccer: Mountaineers draw level with Royals

CALDWELL, Idaho — The Eastern Oregon University women’s soccer team battled out a tie against a solid Hope International team on the road on Thursday, September 7.

The Mountaineers played a neck-and-neck match against the Royals, who came into the match at 4-1-0, and finished with a 1-1 scoreline. The tie moved Eastern Oregon’s record to 2-0-2 on the season.

Eastern Oregon was defensive in the first half, being out shot five to two by Hope International. Despite chances by both teams, the first 45 minutes ended at a 0-0 tie.

The Mountaineers came out firing out of the gates in the second half, wasting no time finding the back of the net. Senior forward Emmy Williams scored off an assist from graduate midfielder Erika Skindlov to give Eastern Oregon a 1-0 advantage.

The Mountaineers held a one-goal lead for most of the second half and nearly held on for a victory, but Hope International managed to even the match at 1-1 with a goal from Christiane Sundstrom in the 88th minute.

Coming off the tie, the Mountaineers are set to open Cascade Collegiate Conference action next weekend. Eastern Oregon will travel to Washington for back-to-back matchups against Northwest at 3 p.m. on Sept. 15 and Evergreen State at 3 p.m. on Sept. 16.
