Dorothy Maxine Noah Koczan, 83, of Payette, Idaho, and formerly of La Grande died Friday at a care center in Payette. A celebration of life will begin at 1 p.m. MDT Wednesday at the United First Methodist Church in Payette. A graveside service will be at 4 p.m. that day at the Summerville Cemetery. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. A complete obituary will be published later.

Darald ‘Red’ Doud

Baker City

A celebration of life for Darald Wayne "Red" Doud will begin at 11 a.m. April 27 at the American Legion Hall, 2129 Second St., in Baker City. Mr. Doud died March 8.

Dorothy Koczan

Formerly of La Grande

1918-2002

Dorothy Maxine Koczan, 83, of Payette, Idaho, and formerly of La Grande and Warrenton, died April 12 at a care center in Payette.

A celebration of life service will start at 1 p.m. MDT Wednesday at the United First Methodist Church in Payette with the Rev. Dave Stewart of the Southern Hills United Methodist Church in Tulsa, Okla., officiating.

A graveside service will follow at the Summerville Cemetery. The service begins at 4 p.m. Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Koczan was born Sept. 9, 1918, to Lorenzo D. and Nora Richardson Noah in Portland. She grew up in La Grande, and in 1939 she married Charles J. Koczan. They especially enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing during their 40 years together.

She had many artistic interests. She liked crafts, textile and oil painting, cake decorating and was active in PTA. She enjoyed her family and friends. Her husband died in 1979.

In recent years she lived in Payette to be close to friends Flora and Bill Ego.

Survivors include three daughters and one son: Charlene Pearce of Juneau, Alaska; Marilyn Drummond of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; Carol Ryan of St. Maries, Idaho; and Robert Koczan of Umatilla. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Royal Villa Care Center, 1713 Center Ave., Payette, Idaho, or to the United First Methodist Memorial Fund for support of the food bank program.

Howard B. Peterman

Union

1950 -2002

Howard B. Peterman, 51, of Union, died April 13 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A memorial service will be held later in Riddle. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is handling arrangements.

Mr. Peterman was born Dec. 3, 1950, in Canyonville, to Charlie Fred and Roberta Faye Seiber Peterman. He worked as a saw man for various lumber mills.

He married Virginia Osborn on May 15, 2001, in Huntington. They moved to Union last August.

He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, artwork, family outings, hunting and children.

Besides his wife of Union, he is survived by his children, Shane Peterman of Charleston, Jamie Peterman of Portland, and Lawrence Wall and Lori’ena Osborn, both of Union; his parents of Riddle; brothers Matt of Tenmile, Dirk of Myrtle Creek and Charlie Jr. of Riddle; sisters, Sandy Peterman of Lookingglass and Tammy Urwin of Portland; his parents; his grandmother, Wilma L. Blair of Riddle, and one grandson.

Helen Jean Speckhart

La Grande

1923-2002

A public graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grandview Cemetery for Helen Jean Speckhart, 79, who died April 15 at a local care center.

The Rev. Doug Hale will officiate. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

A lifelong resident of La Grande, Mrs. Speckhart was born Feb. 24, 1923, to Herbert and Mayme Virginia Snider Speckhart in La Grande. Her aunts Edna Smith, Mollie Gower and Effie Snider

all played major roles in her upbringing.

A La Grande High School and Eastern Oregon University graduate, she married Harlow Speckhart in La Grande on Sept. 9, 1942, and she became a devoted farm wife, mother and member of the agricultural community.

She was a member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of PEO Chapter CO, the Junior Art Research Group and Two Rock Unit of the Oregon Extension Service.

She had a great appreciation and love of music, playing the cello for the Grande Ronde Symphony for many years. She sang in the Grande Ronde Community Chorus. She played the piano and sang for many activities and events.

Survivors are her daughters, Mary Koza and Joanne Lowry-Parsons of La Grande, six grandchildren, four great-grandsons and a great-granddaughter and other relatives.

Her husband died July 2, 2001.

‘Gale’ Beals

Formerly of La Grande

1913 -2002

M. "Gale" Beals, 88, of Palm Desert Calif., and formerly of La Grande died March 2 at Rancho Mirage-Eisenhower Medical Center. A funeral was held at the Palm Springs Mortuary in Cathedral City, Calif.

Mr. Beals was born March 17, 1913, to Gordon and Agnes Hall Beals in Reardon, Wash. He married Marie Detleth in 1934, and in 1956 he came to La Grande, where he was general manager of the Mount Emily Lumber Company.

He was instrumental in developing Camp Elkanah, a church camp near Starkey, from land donated by the lumber company, and gave $40,000 to the camp, owned by the Blue Mountain Association of Conservative Baptists.

He was voted Man of the Year in 1964. After he retired he led a campaign in 1964-66 to build the present Grande Ronde Hospital. The campaign raised close to $400,000, including his own contribution of $20,000. Mrs. Beals was the vice president of the hospital auxiliary.

Survivors include 11 nieces and nephews. His wife, three sisters, Inez Bear, Merle Stone and Cathryn Nehrlich, and two brothers, Melvyn Beals and Warren Beals, all died earlier.

Dean Severns

Dean Severns, 85, formerly of La Grande, died Wednesday in Seattle. Arrangements will be announced later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Carl ‘Oid’ Stockdale

Formerly of Enterprise

1923-2002

Carl "Oid" Stockdale, 78, of Hermiston and formerly of Enterprise died April 15 at Good Shepherd Medical Center. A graveside service with military honors by VFW Post 4307 of Enterprise will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the Enterprise Cemetery.

Mr. Stockdale was born May 27, 1923, to Alva and Anna Paine Stockdale in Mount Vernon. The family moved to Enterprise, where they owned and operated the Vista Theater for many years. He served in the 82nd Airborne Division with the Army Air Forces during World War II, earning two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars. He pursued a singing career in Los Angeles afterwards, but answered the call of duty, serving in the Air Force during the Korean War.

After the war, he returned to his beloved Wallowa County, where he was active in sports programs in Enterprise, especially wrestling, until he moved to Lewiston, Idaho, in 1971. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He married Fern Lunders, and in 1972 the couple moved to Hermiston, where he ran Stockdale Real Estate until his retirement in 1985.

He was a life member of the VFW and the Elks Lodge, both in Enterprise, and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife and sons, Bryan and Jawn Stockdale, all of Hermiston, son Kitt Stockdale and daughter, Melanie Crow, both of Enterprise, stepsons, Russ and Stan Lunders, five grandchildren, and a brother, Gayle Stockdale of Olympia, Wash.

Dean L. Corbin

Dean Leon Corbin, 68, of Cove, died today at a care center in La Grande. Services are under the direction of Loveland Funeral Chapel. A full obituary will be published later.

Dean Severns, 86, of Seattle and formerly of La Grande died Wednesday at a care center. A service will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. N. Frank Cooke officiating. Burial will follow at the Island City Cemetery. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements. A full obituary will be published later.

James Wood

James Wood, 71, of La Grande died Thursday at his home.
