Pet potty stations for the win! Most important hotel feature for pet parents

Not all hotels that allow pets are created equal. There’s “pets allowed” and then there’s “pets welcome” – and discerning pet parents know the difference. When looking to book a hotel with their pets, pet parents know what they need and what they want.

A recent survey conducted by TripsWithPets asked pet parents what the most important hotel amenity they look for when booking accommodations for themselves and their pets. A whopping 70% of respondents indicated that a dog potty station/walking area (aka “green space”) was the most important feature.

Brand loyalty (or not)

The poll also revealed that pet parents’ perception of the hotel brand is predicated on if it is truly pet friendly or just allows pets. Offering an essential feature like a designated potty station for pets goes a long way in securing the business of pet travelers and their people.

“Pet parents are serious consumers and are very passionate about their furkids,” says Kim Salerno, CEO/Founder of TripsWithPets. “Hoteliers that show that they care about the pet guest experience, will win pet parents’ business every time.”

That being said, a clean, well-lit and safe potty station, complete with pet waste bags and trash receptacles is essential to keep them coming back. Further, it’s important that this area be clearly marked and ideally away from normal traffic areas.

Some stand-out hotel brands that do a good job at offering designated pet potty stations at their pet-friendly locations include: Candlewood Suites, Home2Suites, Kimpton, SureStay by Best Western, and Homewood Suites.

Pet welcome gifts, treats at check-in, and pet menu/room service, were among the other pet-related amenities that were considered by pet owners.
