Evelyn M. Smith, 89, of Summerville, died Dec. 30 at a local care center.

A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the Summerville Cemetery Chapel with pastors Steve Kirkeby and Bill Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Summerville Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Mrs. Smith was born April 29, 1912, the daughter of George and Vera Ross Billings in Sioux City, Iowa. She was educated in Richland, S.D. On Dec. 28, 1929, she married Charles Ralph Smith in Sioux City, Iowa. They later moved to California and in 1970 they moved to Summerville from Maywood, Calif.

Mrs. Smith was best known for establishing Grannys Candy more than 20 years ago. Grannys Candy is now run by family members. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking for other people, playing cards and bingo, and angling for catfish.

She loved her grandchildren and her family. She was a member of the Jewell Rebekah Lodge in Summerville.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Leona and Wesley Shaffer of Summerville; son and daughter-in-law, Leroy and Betty Smith of Summerville; son and daughter-in-law, Konnie and Sharon Smith of Chino, Calif.; and son-in-law and daughter, David and Marolyn Smith of La Grande. 21 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; half sisters, Darlene Conti, Betty Billings and Delores Phillips, all of California; and other relatives.

Her husband, Ralph, died on Sept. 14, 2001. One great-grandchild, two great-great-grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters also died earlier.

Martin Thimmes

Formerly of Cove

1944-2001

Martin Gene Thimmes, 57, of Logan, Utah, and formerly of Cove, died Dec. 27 from complications of diabetes. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North St. in Logan. Viewing will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in the Logan City Cemetery.

Mr. Thimmes was born Nov. 21, 1944, to Leonard Martin and Geraldine Wright Thimmes in La Grande. He grew up his grandparents Silver Mountain Ranch in lower Cove and graduated from Cove High School and attended Eastern Oregon University, Dixie College of St. George, Utah, and Utah State University. He went to New Zealand on an LDS mission and served in the Marine Corps, the Air Force and the Army Reserve.

He was a professional land surveyor and forester in Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon and Utah. His surveys included the Virgin River Gorge Highway and the Yellowstone National Park lower-loop highway.

He married Diana Mae Lee in May 1969, and after a divorce he married Madeline Quist Schimmelpfennig in November 1985.

Survivor include his wife of Logan, three children and their spouses, Geri and Michael Hennessy of Omaha, Neb., Martin and Sarah Thimmes of Issaquah, Wash., and Amanda Thimmes of Logan; three stepchildren and their spouses, Steven and Jennifer Schimmelpfennig of Gardnerville, Nev., Karen and John Duncan of Minot AFB, N.D., and Saundra Schimmelpfennig of Keams Canyon, Ariz.; three grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, a brother, Terry Thimmes of La Grande, a stepmother, Mary Ann Thimmes of Vancouver, Wash., and two stepsisters and their spouses, Kristi Thiessen and Judy and Chuck Bailey of Washington.

His parents and a stepfather, Don Blacker, died earlier.

Helen R. Blagg, 83, of Pendleton and formerly of La Grande, died at her home Dec. 31. The funeral will begin at 10 am. Saturday at Bishop Funeral Chapel, 131 S. E. Byers Ave., Pendleton. Burial will follow at the Olney Cemetery.

Mrs. Blagg was born June 18, 1918, to Frank T. and Mabel Remington Brock near The Dalles. She graduated from The Dalles High School in 1936 and married James Blagg there on Oct. 20, 1938. She worked for Pacific Northwest Bell for 30 years, retiring in 1977, and for a short time lived in La Grande, where she was a member of the Son Rise Free Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, camping and dancing and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and the Dirt Dabbler Garden Club.

Survivors include a son, Michael James Blagg of Pendleton; a daughter, Sandra Day of Edmonds, Wash.; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Mae Haynes of The Dalles. Her husband and a brother, Orville Brock, died earlier.

Woody Kennedy

Woodrow Wilson Woody Kennedy, 85, died Dec. 25 at his home. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Elgin Stampede Hall. Daniels Chapel

Mr. Kennedy was born May 2, 1916, to Anna Bertha Rhine and David Ira Kennedy in Blairs Mills, Penn. He married Irene Churchill-Root in Walla Walla on Feb. 21, 1938, and served in the Army during World War II. The couple lived in Vanport, where he worked as a welder at the Vancouver Shipyards and returned to Elgin after the war. He built a house for his family and next door for his mother.

Mr. Kennedy worked in many of the area mills as a carpenter and millwright. In the early 1960s, he began an excavation and dump-truck business and retired in the 1980s. He was a member of the Elgin Stampeders and the Harley Owners Group. He worked with his daughter on the restoration of the Elgin Opera House and was proud of his 13 years of membership in Alcoholics Anonymous.

Survivors include his daughters and their spouses, Christine McLaughlin of Gresham, Deanna and Dave McLaughlin of Pasco; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma Oliver of Summerville and Ruth McClune of Portland; and other relatives.

Conner Allan Polfer, the infant son of Jed Allan and Keri Louise Smutz Polfer of La Grande, died Jan. 1 at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grandview Cemetery with Pastor Irwin Smutz officiating.

Conner was born on Dec. 17, 2001, in La Grande.

In his short life, he deeply touched and was loved by his entire family and will be missed very much, family members said.

Zella May Rowe, 86, of La Grande, died Jan. 1 at a local care center. Mrs. Rowe was born May 25, 1915, to Loke and Docia McInturff Hubbard in Lapwai, Idaho. She attended schools in Idaho and Washington.

As a child, she was an avid horseback rider, an excellent swimmer and loved dancing, especially barn dances the family put on for friends and neighbors.

She married Dale W. Rowe on May 23, 1932, in Clarkston, Wash. The couple worked in the shipyards during World War II and lived in Richland until 1973. She was a member of the Kadlec Hospital Auxiliary in Richland and helped sew hundreds of stocking monkeys for young patients.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Barbara and Stanley Weishaar of La Grande, David and Fran Rowe of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Michael and Sandi Rowe of Kennewick, Wash., nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Buddy K. Glenn

Summerville

Buddy Keith Glenn, 72, of Summerville died Jan. 3 at his home.

A celebration of life service will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at the Summerville Cemetery in Summerville.

Mr. Glenn was born May 29, 1929, to Keith E. and Hester Kasinger Glenn in La Grande. He joined the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War.

He married Reola White in La Grande Dec. 21, 1953.

Mr. Glenn retired from the Union County Road Department after 22 years. He also worked with his son farming and raising cattle.

Mr. Glenn enjoyed hunting and huckleberry-picking. He was a member of the La Grande Elks Lodge 433 and the American Legion Post 43.

Survivors include his wife of Summerville; children, Judy Turner of Dayton, Wash., Randy Glenn of Summerville, and Teri Burgess of Palouse, Wash.; a sister, Joanne Wiseman of La Grande; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Ms. Bouvy was born May 4, 1922, to Dr. Lee and Henrietta Foley Bouvy in La Grande. She was a direct descendent of the pioneering Gangloff and Foley families. She attended Mills Womens College in Oakland, Calif., and on Nov. 19, 1945, married Dr. Robert Stuart in La Grande. She belonged to the Soroptimists and the Grande Ronde Hospital Auxiliary, and was president of the womens golf club at the La Grande Country Club. She enjoyed golf, water skiing and backing a trailer into position. She was an advocate of land preservation.

Survivors include her daughters and their husbands, Joetta and Dale Frank Smith of La Grande, and Theresa and Gene Kennedy of Kula, Hawaii; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her husband died earlier.

Mrs. Gipson was born April 4, 1922, to Walter and Anna Belle Windows Brown in La Grande. She graduated from La Grande High School and in 1941 married Reginald Calvin Gipson in Union. The couple moved to Yakima, Wash., in 1963 and returned to La Grande eight years ago. She enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include her husband of La Grande; a daughter, Dianne Marie Fuller of Spokane; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward Brown of La Grande; and other relatives. A son, Gary Reginald Gipson, died earlier.

Dayton W. Pugh

Formerly of La Grande

Dayton Wayne Pugh, 80, of Hemet, Calif., and formerly of La Grande, died Dec. 31 at Hemet Valley Health Care.

A private family service was held.

He was born in Trumbull, Neb., Aug. 13, 1921. He was a supervisor at the Boise Cascade particleboard plant in La Grande for 18 years. He served in the Army from 1944 to 1946.

A life member of the American Legion and a member of the Elks clubs in La Grande and Hemet, Mr. Pugh enjoyed watching sports, golfing, playing pool, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Evelyn M. Pugh of Hemet; four daughters, Ann Earle of Beaverton, Linda Hoffman of Surprise, Ariz., Karen Simmons of Oroville, Calif., and Daytine Tina Wagoner of Summerville; a son, David Pugh of Vancouver, Wash.; a brother, Merle F. Pugh of Tigard; 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchldren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Jean Frances Stitzel

Cove

Jean Frances Stitzel, who had been an avid horseman and a long-time Sunday school teacher, died Jan. 4 at a care center in Union. She was 84.

A celebration of life service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Cove Methodist Church, with Pastor Jerry Peters officiating. Private interment will be at the Cove Cemetery.

Mrs. Stitzel was born at home in Alicel on May 9, 1917, to J. Frank and Bernice Kelley Miller. She attended Frosty Elementary School and graduated in 1935 from Cove High School.

She attended Kinman Business College in Spokane, graduating in 1937.

She married Harlan Hall in 1939; they divorced in 1950. She married Eugene Stitzel at La Grande in 1951; he died in 1980. In 1982, she married Raymond Cornwell at Cove; he died in 1986.

She was a lifetime member of the Grande Ronde Valley chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. She was an active member in the United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school in Cove for a number of years.

While living in Union, she was an avid horseman and rode in the Union Range Riders riding club. She enjoyed a good dance or a game of cards and loved spending time with her family and friends.

Prior to becoming disabled with Parkinsons disease, she traveled as much as her health would allow.

Survivors include her children, Barton Hall, Judith Hall Snyder and Donna Stitzel Travis, all of Cove; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

Hugh Riggs

La Grande

Hugh Burton Riggs of La Grande died Jan. 3 at Grande Ronde Hospital on his 84th birthday. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., with Sally Wiens officiating.

Mr. Riggs was born Jan. 3, 1918, to Morris Jones and Jenny Inez Black Riggs in Orchards, Wash. He married Esther Murlene Dresser on June 16, 1940, and after a divorce he married Ardeth Emma Moberly on July 10, 1977. The couple moved to the Grande Ronde Valley five years ago to be near family.

He was a logger, heavy equipment operator and carpenter until an auto accident disabled him in 1956. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of La Grande; children and their spouses, Donna McMahon of Hillsboro, Patricia and Dave Rainey of Summerville, and Mary and Ed Rainey of Gresham; eight grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and other relatives. A daughter, Diane Arvidson, a sister, Magnolia Wirfs, and a brother, Roy Riggs, all died earlier.

Perry Glascoe Witherspoon, 96, of Elgin, died Jan. 5 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the Elgin United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Summerville Cemetery with military honors. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St.

Mr. Witherspoon was born Oct. 13, 1905, to James Elvis and Bertha Witty Witherspoon at Cricket Flat near Elgin. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1925 and worked summers on a government survey crew and for the Department of the Interior in Portland as a truck driver. He served in the Army during World War II as a medical corpsman and ambulance driver in the European Theater. After the war, he worked first with his brothers at their sawmill on Stubblefield Mountain and then with the Soil Conservation Service.

On Nov. 24, 1973, he married Gertrude Thompson Larson, and after her death he married Josie Robbs Waelty on July 18, 1987. An avid gardener, he was noted for his generosity and his gentle nature.

Survivors include his wife of Elgin; stepchildren, Jess Larson of La Grande, Pat Way of Hillsboro, Myrna Davis of Gresham and Joyce Lindsay of Belfair, Wash.; numerous stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Lois Cowan of Wallowa; a brother, James D. Witherspoon of Ventura, Calif.; and other relatives. A sister, Jewelle Marie and his brothers, Buford Lee and Buren Dee Witherspoon, all died earlier.

Duane Ira Griff Griffith, 71, of La Grande died Jan. 1 at his home. A celebration of life will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., with Sally Wiens officiating.

Mr. Griffith was born March 23, 1930, to Elmo W. and Dorothy L. Potter Griffith in Bemidji, Minn. He graduated from the Oregon Technical Institution in Klamath Falls with a degree in land surveying. He served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954 as a boom operator in the newly formed air-to-air refueling division. He refueled the sniffer F-84 jets above the first testing of the hydrogen bomb in Operation Ivy off Kwajalein Atoll.

Mr. Griffith married Terry Lincecum on June 13, 1969, in Lakeview. He was a partner in the surveying firm of Bagett, Griffith and Blackman, Oregons longest partnership. He moved to La Grande in 1971 to open their second office. He retired in 1994.

He was a member of the Grande Ronde Black Powder Club and the National Rifle Association and past president of the Blue Mountain Chapter of the Professional Land Surveyors Organization. He enjoyed the mountains, elk hunting, camping, gunsmithing, genealogy, writing and making furniture.

He wrote and published his trilogy autobiography The Potter Farm of Koochiching County, Aw hell … Lets Do It and Wwwhere the Hell Did My Fffuel Go?!

Survivors include his wife of La Grande; children and their spouses, Craig and Nancy Griffith of Beavercreek, Bruce and Nancy Griffith of Brookings, and Randy and Marcy Jo Griffith of Molalla; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; his mother and a sister, Wilda Rottum, both of Myrtle Creek; a brother, Gary Griffith

Merlyn Whitfield Langford, 86, of Union died Jan. 7 at a local care center. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the Union United Methodist Church with Pastor Jerry Peters officiating. A private burial will be at the Union Cemetery.

Mr. Langford was born Feb. 27, 1915, to William Whitfield and Lola Bell Cline Langford in Union. He married Irene A. Watts on July 24, 1954, in Baker City. He lived in Union all his life and ran Langfords Grade A Dairy. He delivered milk house to house for years in Union, Cove, Elgin, Hot Lake and to local schools. He was a member of the Union Sportsmans Club, the La Grande Rifle and Pistol Club, the Good Sams Club, the Union Fire Department, the Union Range Riders, the

Union Whirlaway Square Dance Club and the Oregon Dairymens Association.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of Union; a son and his wife, Dennis and Colleen Langford of Union; daughter and son-in-law, Janette and Dave Roberts of Yuba City, Ariz., stepson and his wife, Ronald and Thomasine Morris of Cove; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and other relatives. Jennie Cookson

Jennie Faye Cookson, 66, of La Grande, died Jan. 6 at a local care center. At her request there will be no public service. A private family burial will be at the Island City Cemetery.

Mrs. Cookson was born Aug. 2, 1935, to Arthur Truman and Ada Elizabeth Sinclair Whiteman in La Grande. She attended school in La Grande and married Earl Cookson here. She was a member of the Catholic church. In her younger days she enjoyed swimming, picnicking, having barbecues, fishing, mushroom hunting, going to the mountains and spending time with her family and her dogs.

A son, Carl Speer Jr., and sisters, Nancy Rachau and Donna Whiteman, died earlier.

Hutch Hutchison

Formerly of La Grande

1938 – 2002

Parley Leonard Hutch Hutchison, 64, formerly of La Grande, died Jan. 11 in Mount Vernon.

A graveside service will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the Prairie City Cemetery.

Mr. Hutchison was born Jan. 6, 1938, in La Grande to John Hutchison and Madalene M. Garrett. He grew up in La Grande, Baker City and the Austin-Bates area and attended Prairie City High School.

He joined the Navy in December 1955 and retired on May 1, 1979. He served on several Naval ships and was aboard the APL5 in DaNang, Vietnam.

He moved to Mount Vernon after he retired and worked as a logger before moving to Medford in 1982, where he was a corrections cook-supervisor for the Jackson County Sheriffs Department until he retired in November 1999.

He returned to Mount Vernon afterwards.

He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, baseball, football and growing flowers. He built and flew model airplanes.

He is survived by his son, Matthew; a stepdaughter, Jennifer; two brothers, Bob of Mount Vernon and Ken of Albany; three sisters, Patsy Brooks of Rosalia, Wash., Hazel Berdahl of Baker City, and Linda Hanks of Tyler, Texas; and a granddaughter.

Coleman Mullins

Cove

1922-2002

Coleman Haynie Mullins, 79, of Cove died Jan. 10 in Portland.

A celebration of life will be at

1 p.m. Thursday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., with Sally Wiens officiating.

Fraternal services are under the auspices of the Cove Masonic Lodge.

Committal and military honors will follow at the Cove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at Daniels.

Mr. Mullins was born Jan. 15, 1922, to Elmer C. and Virginia Tollier Mullins in Russellville, Ark. The family moved to California, and he graduated from Covina High School. He enlisted in the Army in December 1942 and served in the European Theater. He was discharged in April 1946.

Mr. Mullins married Nocoma Nickie Mullins in La Vegas on April 12, 1942. She died in July 2000.

He worked in pipeline construction. In 1964, he moved his family to Cove.

Mr. Mullins was a member of the Cove Lodge 91 of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and was a master of the lodge in1971.

He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and playing ball with them, family members said. He enjoyed playing pool with his friends and neighbors, golfing and picking cherries.

Mr. Mullins is survived by two sons, Mike Mullins of La Grande and Mark Mullins of Fruitland, Idaho; a daughter, Pat Mullins of Hermiston; a sister, Lucreta Paul of Chandler, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and other relatives.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cove Masonic Lodge or to the charity of the givers choice in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Terry Shepherd

Elgin

Terry Shepherd, 50, of Elgin, died Jan. 10 in Boise. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Elgin United Methodist Church with Pastor Elmer Yoder officiating.

Mr. Shepherd was born Feb. 20, 1951, to Floyd R. and Anna K. Shepherd in Montrose, Colo. He grew up in Grand Junction, Colo., and on Oct. 16, 1993, he married Joann Herman of Grand Junction.

The family moved to Elgin in 1998. He worked for D&B Supply in Island City and for the past two years headed up the Elgin Christmas parade. He was a member of the Elgin United Methodist Church, the Elgin Lions Club and the Eighth Street Players. He enjoyed participating in community projects, camping, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife and children, Gena, Charissa, Catrina and Nick, all of Elgin; his mother; a brother, Floyd, and two sisters, Donna Hunt and Dolly Oberding, all of Grand Junction, and another sister, Sharon Wimer of New Mexico.

Donations may be made to the Elgin United Methodist Church or to an account at the Elgin Community Bank to assist the family.

Anale Clark, 89, of La Grande and formerly of Enterprise and Elgin died Jan. 10 at a local care center. A private family service will be at the Wallowa Cemetery. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Clark was born March 3, 1912, to Ed and Dora McCubbin Clark in Enterprise. She graduated from Enterprise High School in 1930 and married Leo Glenn Clark on Nov. 6, 1932. She was a member of the Christian Church and Grange 1039 in Rayton, Wash. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting.

Survivors include her sons, Glenn G. Clark of Elgin and Leo Clark of Uvalde, Texas; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Avale Collins of Richland; and a brother, Everette Jack Thompson of Everett, Wash.

Her husband died earlier.

Jean Guenther

Formerly of La Grande

Jean Elizabeth Henning Guenther, 80, died Jan. 2 at the home of her daughter at Offutt Field, Neb. She is formerly of La Grande. A service will be held later. Powers Funeral Home of Tacoma, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Guenther was born in La Grande and graduated from

La Grande High School in 1940. She later attended Eastern Oregon State College and the University of Oregon.

Victor Pike

Union

1908-2002

Victor Raymond Pike, 93, of Union died Jan. 14 at the home of his daughter in Union. A private service will be held. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pike was born March 3, 1908, to Elbert Ellsworth and Bertha Lillian Palmer Pike in Charleston, Vt. He attended elementary school near Rutland, Utah, and high school and college in South Lancaster, Mass. He married Hope Marguerite Winsor on June 19, 1935, on Governors Island, Maine. He was a minister and taught high school at Seventh-day Adventist schools in Indiana and Wisconsin. The couple moved from Gresham two years ago to be close to family.

Survivors include his wife, children, Dr. Marguerite Pike of Union, Elizabeth Pike of Spokane, Ruth Wilcox of Gresham, Raymond Calvin Pike of Auburn, Wash., five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and other relatives. Three brothers, Roy, Caroll and Bert Pike, all died earlier.

Lois I. Dodd

Lois I. Dodd, 77, of Wallowa died Wednesday at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.

A funeral service will start at 11 a.m. Monday at Bollman Funeral Home in Enterprise with private burial at the Enterprise Cemetery.

Doris Martha Arnott, 88, of Cove, died Jan. 15 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., with the Rev. Norman Shrumm of the United Presbyterian Church officiating.

Mrs. Arnott was born March 16, 1913, to John and Olive Duff Beight in East Palestine, Ohio. She married David Arnott Jr., in May 1939 in Missoula, Mont. She taught school in Jefferson and in Lemon Grove, Calif., and worked as a technical writer for General Dynamics. She was a member of the Gad About Club and was a tour guide for several years.

The couple moved to Cove in 1990. She was a member of the Home Extension and the Teachers Association. She enjoyed attending Great Decisions, gardening, growing roses, reading and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her husband of Cove; children and their spouses, David Arnott III of La Grande, James and Lisa Arnott of Union; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a brother Paul Beight of Albany; a sister, Ruth Dawson of Albany; and other relatives. A brother and two sisters died earlier.
