Spending on Oregon governor’s race hits $47 million, smashes previous record

SALEM — Oregon’s three leading candidates for governor have blown through the previous fundraising record, with a combined $47.1 million in total reported donations to their campaigns four weeks before Election Day.

Four years ago, Democrat Kate Brown and Republican Knute Buehler raised a total of more than $37.8 million in the entire cycle and spent $37 million, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported.

Spending on Oregon governor’s races has risen over time — the 2018 race broke the previous spending record of $18 million from 2010. But the competitive three-way race this year between Democrat Tina Kotek, unaffiliated candidate Betsy Johnson and Republican Christine Drazan has accelerated the spending on, and by, candidates.

Democrats are fundraising furiously to help Kotek, who faces a narrower path than Democrats in recent cycles, largely because Johnson, a former longtime Democratic lawmaker, appears to be attracting more Democratic voters than Republicans, according to polling commissioned by The Oregonian/OregonLive. Johnson is campaigning against crime and homelessness, both of which are top-of-mind concerns with many likely Oregon voters, the poll found. As a Democrat during her time in the Legislature, she voted with Republicans against gun and environmental regulations, but she is a strong supporter of abortion rights.

Republicans are also donating big to Drazan since they view Oregon as a prime pickup opportunity, and billionaire Nike co-founder Phil Knight has thrown support to both Johnson and Drazan: a total of $3.75 million spread across the first nine months of the year, then $1 million to Drazan last week.

As of Monday, Kotek had reported total donations of $15.9 million and her top donors were the Democratic Governors Association ($4.9 million), Service Employees International Union ($790,000) and Stand for Children Oregon ($600,000).

Johnson had raised $16.7 million as of last week, the latest information reported by her campaign. In addition to Knight’s $3.75 million, her top donations came from The Papé Group heavy machinery dealers ($1 million), Columbia Sportswear CEO Tim Boyle ($789,000) and California-based Sierra Pacific Industries, one of the nation’s largest lumber producers ($500,000).

Drazan reported total fundraising of $14.5 million. In addition to Knight, her three top donors are the Republican Governors Association ($4.1 million) and the Swanson Group ($500,000) which owns timber mills in Oregon.
